Thread: Ancient turned two band.

So a friend that's gone awol again, MikeT, sent me a slab of some oak exhumed from an Irish bog. Seems the peat, or tannic acids, or leprechaun magic sealed the wood and prevented it from breaking down for thousands of years in those swampy hide aways. This stuff is dated around 5000 years old and received nothing but shellawax friction paste after turning. That black shade runs all the way though it.
It's cool to think it's turned from a tree that was growing when the pyramids were still in the design stage.

Knots a 2 band silvertip, and it sits at a 26 mm size x 138 mm total height.
88 mm handle, 50 mm loft.





Seems I tend to prefer a bigger handle, makes a nicer lather I think..

So...Got enough to make some scales left? Love that grain!

Scales, a shave bowl, maybe a box fir the whole shebang. He sent me a very large slab. Some saved for a box idea for him, for when he returns, but the rest is still quite a bit of stock. Was thinking since seeing some outback made, that this oak would make great scales. Might use it for the reskinning of that Belfast razor I have actually. Neat that you can still see that open grain oak look, but in jet black, and much heavier, denser wood now.

Awesome - I remember that from the meet at your place...weighed a ton....thousands of years old, who knows how many chunks of old Wizards and Leprechauns and various chunks of people, animals, and other debris got mixed in with that....spooky.

I can imagine putting that brush on the stand and hear it howling in the middle of the night.....creeps me the crap out......

But so awesome.....

In case you didn't know ............. tobacco pipes can also be made from the old Irish bog wood. I've never had one, but I'm tempted

That's a gorgeous pipe on the wiki Jimmy! Now you got me tempted to give that a go this winter maybe.

Excellent work Mike! Crazy how black that stuff is. Is it any denser than regular oak or much the same?

Much denser, and seemed a little more prone to tear out than young oak. The turning filings were nearly brittle and crisp like as they hit the floor. Seemed almost petrified, but not quite in its reaction to the tools. Needed a very sharp edge or things got fuzzy quickly..
I saved a brush sized chunk for you to try out when we see each other again. Am curious as to your thoughts on it as well.
