Thread: First brush

Have long admired the work here. Waiting on a badger knot, but had a new Turkish horse hair brush lying around, so popped the knot out. Haven't turned anything in at least 15 years, and never anything this small. It shows.
Heart Rimu blank finished in beeswax, Paua inlay. Less than perfect, too much epoxy and the old glue shows from the original fitting of the knot.
Tradition here is to gift your first piece, and these knots aren't too bad after a bit of use. Should be a good starter brush, so it's off to my nephew along with a Gillette razor, a few blades and a tub of cella.

Nice brush. I have used a lathe but I have never turned anything small, but it looks like it should be fairly challenging. I am looking forward to seeing more from you. My wife usually calls a lot of my first of items.

A nice gift for sure.

I once turned a pair of chess pawns for a metal project. They were about an inch tall. Nice brush.

Well done Graeme. I can hone razors and make scales but as for getting behind a wood lathe again... no way Jose. Hats off The Paua shell insert is a great touch.

I think it's a great gift and your nephew will not only have a great start in wet shaving, plus he will always be able to look at that brush and know that it was made by you for him.

Keep at it and if this is the quality of your first effort I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Very nice, I like the wood. Nice warm time to it and the shell accent is a beautiful touch. Looks like you will have a proud nephew on the receiving end.

There is a bit of history to the timber, it was reclaimed from a 2 storey villa which would have been a very high end house when built. It was converted into accommodation for senior US military stationed in Wellington during WW2.
There is a variety of timber came out of it including rimu, matai, kauri, some aussie jarrah and even some north American cedar.

Great work! Not bad at all for jumping back on the bike, so to speak. I bet the next one from you will be even better!
