Maggard's has many badger knots for a very reasonable price. Their 28mm 2-band, a terrific knot, is only $29.95.

Elite Razor also sells excellent knots for a great price. I have a couple of his Manchurian knots that I prefer over Simpson.

In a practical sense that is next to impossible to do as China supplies most all the badger hair to the world. You either buy direct or from another country where the knots have been imported from China or the knots are made there from badger hair imported form China. Single source one stop shopping at it's finest.

badger comes from china so eat it, its the only source, its all in who puts it together, i have a Maggards coming myself for the same reason as Bob did,, i have a chubby 2 syn i want a badger in. but the Virginia Sheng is one of my better Knots, Andrew installed on one of my favorite handles before i got the Shavemacs, still use it alot, with no hair loss and dense.

I know what ya guys are saying. I think China is one of the only places that are allowed to harvest the hair. That knot is a damn good looking knot Bob, and the fact its a fan shape, but I think Im going to look into Maggarts other 30mm badger knot. Than compare to V.S. to see what else i can come up with. This handle is way too heavy to be using this upcoming brush as an every day brush. The wife told me Id have to be careful using it so I dont knock myself out with it. Ha.

The handle empty is 12oz. And hollow, so i will fill it with something and glue in a knot and Im figuring almost a full pound when done. But it should polish up really nice and be a monster of a brush. Even if it dont get used often it will make a nice display piece.

I even thought about the Tuxedo knot, but I got a couple already. Just not 30mm. I do have a 30mm synthetic already and love it. So natural is next.

About 3 years back a hobbyist on another forum had knots made to order from a small Chinese cosmetics company. Monkey see, monkey do I had some made as well and they came out quite nice. They made mine to order for about $30 each. It didn't take much time at all and communicated well via emails. I don't know though if they are still in business as its been a while.

Thanks for the suggestions, this is a question that I was going to ask, as I'll be needing to order knots at some point.

The conflicting opinions on quality are what give me pause.
I know they mostly come from China (knot and hair), heard there were a couple other places though.
At least being assembled here would hold a little more value in my mind.
There are definitely varying qualities of knots, and from the opinions it seems that you're more likely to get a high quality knot from a locally "assembled" knot.

Good luck finding a locally hand tied/assemble knot and even if you are successful in that chances are it will be made from badger hair sourced in China. China supplies virtually all the worlds badger hair.

There are many grades of badger hair knots and unfortunately there is no industry standard for what any of the grades mean. Also there is batch to batch variations of the same grade of knot from even the same maker of brushes.

That said, about all you can do is know what you expect from a badger knot in terms of feel, size, shape and flow through and do you due diligence by searching the web for reviews of various knot suppliers. I would say ordering from a reputable maker/supplier like Shavemac would go a long way to insuring a quality knot. There are a few of those out there to choose from as Shavemac is only one example.

Personally, I like 2 band badger knots and after having read good reviews of Maggards SHD 2 band knots decided to order one. It was the first time I had ordered from Maggards and was highly pleased with the knot they sent me. It could just as easily gone the other way as you never really know till you actually use the brush.

    Well, yes, but...

The hairs are from China in any event.

Then there is the question of how the knots are assembled. There is an easy way, and a good way.

The easy way is to string the hairs together, and cut them into shape. If you're the inquisitive type, search for various videos on YouTube.

The good way is to pick the right hairs, in the right order, and assemble them into shape without having to cut the bulb into shape afterwards.

If you think "28 bucks shipped" will get you a knot made in the good way, think again.

So, is there anyone in North America that assembles badger hair knots in a good way?
