My First Homemade Shaving Brush

I've had a blast this last week in the woodworking shop making brushes with my dad and brother-in-law. This is the first shaving brush handle I've made. What a blast! I get the feeling that this will be the first of many homemade brushes. The handle is Honduras Rosewood and the knot is 24mm short loft Silvertip from "the Nib." The rosewood turned beautifully and sanded down to what I felt was a very nice natural shine. I finished the handle with three applications of teak oil. I was thinking of applying one or two more coats, but I was happy with the color after three. So, I stopped. I glued the knot in last night, and I can't wait to give it a spin tonight!







The razor is my grandfather's razor which I received from my father. It is a Wester Brothers Anchor Brand 5/8 "Manganese Steel."

Thanks for the encouraging words, guys! I used the brush for the first time for my evening shave last night and it worked great. I whipped up a daub of C.O. Bigelow and had a pretty good shave. I was pleased with how soft the brush felt even though it is a short loft. It is definately softer than the boar brush I have been using for the last year.

You know, jaswarb, I've never been much of a face latherer, but perhaps I'll try it with this one. I have always enjoyed whipping up the lather in my mug and then keeping it warm in the sink for future passes. I guess there must be a way to keep lather warm for 2nd and 3rd passes when you face lather.

I have a small ceramic cup which I fill with hot water to let the brush soak then I face lather and put the loaded brush into the empty cup it stays warm throughout the shave. I have of late been only doing a single ATG pass so the warmth doesn't have to remain anyway.
