I have been daily watching all the absolute ineffectiveness bordering on criminal insanity shown by our diplomats! They who don't learn about the folks that are living under mores and religions' hafto's and they do not care to understand. They then go off on a power trip instead of doing something really smart...like viewing the situation rather than the boss's posterior. Such daily stupidity of diplos' brings me back to the Kieth Laumer stories of "Retief" an all around observant 3rd minister..read "gofer" that actually accomplishes the best end result! Unfortunately, Our diplos don't seen to be able to learn anything but pleasing the politician that got them the job title.
""Retief Unbound""
by Keith Laumer
They are cheap on Alibris and i have been enjoying them since the 60's

PS. Laumer had been in diplomatic service..Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

"The disposal of Human Waste: a comparison between Ancient Rome and Medieval London"
I kid you not...
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanks - I'll check it out. I'm writing a paper on smells in mediaeval cities to present at a conference in England in a couple of weeks. So things like the defenestration of human waste has loomed unusually large in my life lately.
BTW - turns out sewage wasn't what generated the most complaints - it was how butchers disposed of their waste.

The Ghost Map was a very good read.
I recently read At Home by Bill Bryson. It had a chapter about plumbing with details about construction of sewers in London.

Alone Against the Atlantic by Gerry Spiess with Marlin Bree. An OK read with a good story. A good use of the porch on a Thursday evening.

I'm half way thru Greg Iles latest Penn Cage novel called Natchez burning.
Iles writes easy going and entertaining crime/legal thrillers.
Good summertime reads.Bjoernar
