Currently half way though a re-read of Iain M Banks' Consider Phlebas.

Planning to reread a few of his novels, namely The Crow Road and Against a Dark Background, for starters. Next up in my to-read queue, though, is a non-fiction book by Iain Banks—Raw Spirit: In Search of the Perfect Dram—documenting a tour of Scotland's whisky distilleries; followed by The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi, which I hear is very good.

I read a book called Silverthorn by Raymond Fiest last week - a fantasy novel, second in the "Riftwar" series. I remember reading the first, Magician, as a kid. It's a pretty good yarn, though being the second in a trilogy means the ending is nebulous and I'm seriously contemplating buying the last one to find out what happens - or maybe I'll just Google it (but there's no fun in that!).

This week I am reading a truly terrible book called "The Bones of Zora". Well, I keep falling asleep so I am only 3 chapters in - maybe it gets better... Some kind of sci-fi I think.

why don't you read something else then?

World War Z. I haven't seen the movie (although I am curious about it now) but when I saw the book in an airport bookshop on the weekend after having listened to three distinct groups of friends/colleagues talking about it over the last couple of months, I figured what the heck. It's actually a very interesting read and not at all what I had expected.

And just before that (I know I'm not reading it "now" but it's too good not to mention!) was Sylvain Tesson's "Consolations of the Forest". Tesson is a French travel writer who spent five months living alone on the shores of Lake Baikal. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the outdoors, dogs, and books.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Just finished the 2nd in Rick Atkinson's liberation trilogy. I look forward to the last one, The Guns at Last Light, which wraps things up in Europe.

Just started Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing. About Ernest Shackleton's voyage to be the first party to cross Antarctica on foot. Pretty exciting so far.

I enjoyed this book and others about Shackleton. My take on him is different than any I have read.

If he wasn't such a pompous idiot he would have never got himself and others in a position to become a hero to many.
