Maybe they'd just watched the movie and this was a protest against Irish actors portraying past Presidents?

As offensive as it may be to people, and I agree that at the very least it is quite disrespectful, in a robust democracy I guess these things can happen (that's if it is a political statement - could just be a nutjob with a can of green paint). I think the US democracy is robust enough to cope with paint on a Lincoln-shaped rock. I'm sure Mr Lincoln put up with a lot more than that back in his day.

What I find most disturbing about this incident, is not that some leftist hippie vandalized a monument. It's that DC is under such surveillance in efforts to 'keep us safe', that they couldn't catch this punk until they were on to their third green paint incident days later. Hey terrorists, hide your bombs in paint cans. Pathetic.

True,,,,,Johnny,,,,,safety here in America, for the most part , is a facade. If you think about the past 12 years, many of the disasters that were averted, where discovered by citizens who took the time to second guess, what did not seem right.
It was not due to government effectiveness.

The articles I'm reading say they arrested a 58-year old homeless Chinese woman who doesn't even speak English, is possible mentally ill (you think?), and may be here on an expired visa. How do you get from that to "some leftist hippie," JohnnyCake?

Firstly I disagree with illegal graffiti and vandalism.
But, I would have thought that the police and other agencies would have MUCH more serious crimes to investigate. I would far rather my house was drawn on than it was robbed or my family hurt.
I am not saying the perpetrator shouldn't be persued, However not at the expense of finding worse criminals. However I would imagine that this will/has attracted a large number of law enforcers.

ScoutHikerDad. It's easy to conclude what I did. Leftists are always damaging and threatening to damage historical landmarks in the District. Had you seen the Occupy jerks urinating on everything the way Washingtonians did, you too may also make the quick jump from vandalism to lefty statists. I don't at all suppose you support anything like this behavior. "Hippie" perhaps means something different for the two of us. Back to the issue. A foreign nationalist who overstayed their visa threw paint on three landmarks in DC, and that's how we catch illegals?

And historically the right wing extremists have been so peace loving.

"Extremists" have been violent for the right & are bad for either side. The word itself, sets them apart.

I totally agree, was just making a point. Johhnycakes "conclusion" was actually an assumption based on his prejudices, not on facts, this is the fast way to breed irrational hatred. He may be proved right but at this stage even he says that he doesn't know.
