We tried to put together a team in Australia once, but all our mates beat us up for wearing girly padding

I think I saw once an Australian Rules Football player in an interview on TV. He said he didn't understand why professional American football players needed pads until he realized how big the average professional player is. Some of these guys are huge -- 6'-6" and 300 lbs. and bigger. It's amazing they don't get hurt more by just falling on each other. I mean Brian Urlacher is 6'-4" and 250 lbs and fast and athletic ---these guys wouldn't live long without pads. But yeah, Jimbo, y'all probably play water polo with salties in Australia so it must seem girly. Hooroo,

Nah Justin, I'm only joking. Aussie rules players don't typically wear padding, but that's the nature of the game (lots of running and jumping and kicking) and the guys who play that are usually tall and light. You see a lot more padding in rugby league and rugby union - mainly shoulder pads and head gear.

I tried Gridiron (sp??) as a lad - tough game and I've got a lot of respect for anyone who's good at it.

[FYI, the junior league play water polo with salties. Seniors grease themselves up with pig fat and jump in with sharks...]

It's all good Jimbo. Nothing I say on this forum is serious (unless instructional). All sports have their value . I didn't realize rugby players wore pads. Never heard of Gridiron. Anyway, take it easy, mate.

Cool.. I think Gridiron is maybe one of those colloquialisms we Aussies use for American Football, like how we call English football soccer. maybe this should go on the colloquialisms thread... Have you guys never called it gridiron?

Yup, in the States, "gridiron" usually refers to the field (because of the markings) as opposed to the game itself.

I was reading it like gridi-ron --thought it was some type of Australian sport--I had my brain focused on Australian colloquialisms --yeah this refers to the field and may be used to reference football ---but yeah. I was thinking what in the hell is gridi-ron --and imagining some Australian sport with bomerangs envolved . I had a brain fart. Hooroo, mate.

No worries. But it's funny you should mention boomerangs - a few years back the Victorian Gridiron league tried boomerangs instead of a football to add, you know, an Aussie flavour. Huge failure - noone with a decent quarterback ever made any yardage (although it was funny to see the wide receivers tear off downfield and then race back toward the line of scrimmage...) and the whole offensive play just degenerated into a monotonous series of hand-offs...
