Sigh... there has not been a really good Batman yet. yeah - Michael Keaton had good mannerisms, but the story sucked and physically he was not close.
Gotta remember he is a NutJob who trained for 20 years to be perfect before putting on the suit. We need someone built like a young Arnie, or even The Rock, who can act the part. Bruce Wayne slumps, shuffles, smiles and has a nice tenor voice... Once The Mask goes on he straightens up, scowls and voice drops to something like Dirty Harry. low, threatening and never yells like Christian Bale's version...... sigh... CGI is probably the only way to go to get Characters like him, The Phantom, etc correct......and do not even get me started on the disappointment of the portrayal of Tarzan in movies !!!

I don't know where the sarcasm button was or I would have used it when I was talking about Michael Keaton's Batman. I thought he was terrible...but it seems like almost everybody else thought he was a good Batman.

I thought Bale made a good Batman. Really good as a matter of fact. I get where you are coming from, but I feel it will be IMPOSSIBLE to ever get anybody to look like Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" Batman, which seems to be the way you are leaning appearance wise unless I interpreted your post wrong. But then I think it comes off kind of ridiculous. Like nobody being able to recognize Superman because he puts on a pair of glasses. You have this HUGE dude, and an equally HUGE multi billionaire with the necessary funds to pay for all of the crap Batman has (those wonderful toys as the Joker put it) but nobody would figure it out.

"Sir, we think Bruce Wayne might be Batman. They are both just TREMENDOUSLY huge individuals. Plus, they are never seen together. He has the money to afford all of the gadgets Batman has, his parents were murdered in front of his eyes so he has the motive and psychological damage to dress like a creature of the night and fight crime, and he has the loosest of alibis to cover why he sustained the exact same injuries that Batman has, i.e. fell skiing in the Alps."

"Are you crazy man. Bruce Wayne has a tenor voice and is slightly slumped over. Batman stands up straighter and has a scary rasp."

I know what you are getting at and I think it works in the comics, but for a movie that has to appeal to a broader audience I'm not sure how well it would go over. I liked the way they portrayed Batman in the last movie. As an operator with nearly 20 years in (6 months from now I can retire) I have sustained several injuries in training and combat. Had some surgeries. Your body just takes a beating that it can't recover from. I did find his voice to be overly raspy though. Pretty easy target for comedians and stuff to make fun of. If you havent seen this yet, I will try to imbed it in my poost. It is Patton Oswalt as the Penguin talking to Batman about killing. It is frackin hillarious, especially if you are a Batman fan.

Batman vs. The Penguin (with Patton Oswalt) - YouTube

The Phantom would be a good movie, but then again I think it comes down to the bottom line. Money. Like a Wonder Woman movie, they are hesitant to make one due to its perceived probability of commercial failure, plus the name doesn't have brand cachet attached to it so to speak. I know who the Phantom is and YOU know who the Phantom is but almost nobody else does. I brought up the fact in the agency I work at that I would like to see a Phantom movie and of the 37 individuals in that section, which is a pretty good cross of demographics (women, men, young, old, black, white, hispanic, Indian, straight, gay,etc...) 21 of them had NO IDEA who the Phantom was. 5 vaguely remembered a really terrible movie about a guy wearing a pink leotard with a Lone Ranger mask. 7 knew who he was from the old comic strips but didn't really remember much except that he lived in a place that looked like Skeletor's castle, and 4, not including myself, knew the entire story and thought it would be cool. I mentioned a Flash movie and everybody knew who the Flash was. So as a Hollywood guy, you have to pick one or the other...you are gonna go with the Flash.

I think in order to make a Phantom movie, it will first need to become a hugely popular comic again. Get a solid writer and artist who can either tell a great period peice ala Indianna Jones (my preference) or someone who can pull off a modern interpretation. If they can do that, Hollywood might be interested. As for Tarzan...I feel your pain. I don't think anybody has gotten it right since Johny Weismueller, certainly not the Tarzan roar. I'm only 41, and it may be just nostalgia on my part, but I miss that old Tarzan. My dad even wanted to name me Boy when I was born but momma wouldn't let him. True Story.

Anyway, heres to hoping for a good Superman/Batman movie with Ben Affleck utterly stunning everyone with his rendition of the Caped Crusader. My biggest fear for the movie is the director. I havent heard many good things about him.

@Kwlfca - Conroy does a great job as the animated Batman. I love him and Mask of the Phantasm is one of the better Batman movies ever made. Until the new ones came out it was probably my favorite. It would be interesting to see if he could do it in "real life" so to speak. I havent seen him do much since Wings.

Even Kevin Conroy made fun of Christian Bale's Batman voice (watched it on YouTube), which was pretty funny.

They should just get Affleck to work with Conroy to work on his Batman voice. If he can't say "I AM VENGEANCE! I AM THE NIGHT! I AM BATMAN!" properly then it's a no go.

Good points - all of them. Not trying to be argumentative, just my 2 cents.
The Huge physical part is more about how much he trained to be perfect, where 2nd best was not an option. yeah - in the real world i do not think there is a single superhero that would not be recognised except perhaps Captain Marvel.....
Johnny Weismuller was always my favourite - just wish he played the character as a well educated, well spoken man of the world. Not a hairless ape with issues with human language. and "Boy" - Tarzan's son, John Clayton, known as Jack, was "Korak", meaning "The Killer" in the language of the Mangani. Way cooler... Agan, not arguing, just my view.
One of the very best Graphic Novels {grown up comics} i have is when Tarzan is in Gotham and crosses paths with The Batman. Then they end up in Africa... Now THAT would be an awesome movie!
Oh yeah .... remember, we are not talking reality here. If you want reality in your superheroes, the maybe The Punisher is where to look. Or Tarzan.... cause he is real...though he has another name and no longer lives in Africa....

I have that. The Batman/Tarzan crossover is very well done. As for Tarzan, it is hard to pick which interpretation to go with. is it the Weismueller, raised by apes and feral creature type Tarzan living in the jungle ala Johnny Weismueller, or is it the Greystoke: Legend of Tarzan ala Christopher Lambert. The problem is people like us who are fanboys know what that is. i.e. we know about Greystoke. The average person, like my dad who never read the books and only knows Tarzan from the movies, would be confused. Take the Greystoke movie. It didn't fare well at the box office. If you could find the right actor for the role, and director and everything else you could make a great movie. The problem is getting Hollywood to take a chance. I know from talking to various people in the industry that they are hesitant to take risks as one bad film can nearly detroy them. So they have marketing demographic meetings where they pitch ideas to random people they pull off the street. They say, "Tarzan. A well educated, well spoken man who is the Earl of Greystoke but was raised..."

When the people look at him and say" Where is his loincloth? Does he speak in broken English. Umgowa! Umgowa! What about the yell?"

They immediatley say "we need to change this to make it more suitable to the audiences expectations. As well as adding other ridiculous items/characters to make it more politically correct. For example, Thor.

I liked Thor. It was a good movie in my opinion. Not the best, but better than some. Now Thor is the story of the Norse Gods. Norse. That is to say, you can't get much more Aryan/nazi poster child looking than the Norse. But when they made the movie, they cast Idris Elba as Heimdall and Tabanudo Hasano, a Japanese actor as Hogun. Don't get me wrong, both great actors. Hasano is considered the finest actor in Japan today and Idris Elba is amazing. He was great in "Luther" and in "Pacific Rim". But casting a Japanese and a black guy as Norse Gods makes ...no sense. When asked why, the director said he wanted more diversity in his cast, and wanted it to appeal to a broader audience. Meaning he didn't just want whites going to see a movie about white people. So it was to stimulate ticket sales.

I hope they don't do that with a Tarzan movie. Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle. Starring Jet Li as Tarzan. Antonio Banderas in a cameo role as his father. Helen Mirren as Tarzans mom. Beyonce as Jane. and Wes Studi as King George.

As for the reality, I know none of its real. Its just hard to please everybody. Especially somebody with Batman as their avatar. Not as a ding against you, but I assume you know more than the average bear about Batman and you care more. So if they do something slightly different you get all "Why would you do that?" Like me everytime I watch a movie about Soldiers or Special Forces or Snipers. i just have to hold my tongue and say this movie is made for normal people and not to get every detail right to please me.

I do hope somebody does a GOOD Tarzan movie someday. Unfortunately, I brought this up to a friend on another forum who is in the movie industry and he says the failure of The Lone Range/John Carterr kind of put Hollywood on a hold as far as period peices (Tarzan, The Phantom, The Shadow) being made in favor of more marketable modern movies like Justice League, Flash, Xmen, Avengers.

I would love to see a really GOOD movie with the Shadow.
