Actually I have it on good authority the Rover on mars has great pictures of the plane landing there and the passengers frolicking on a hillside.

That story has so many factual errors, I wonder if the author didn't embellish his credentials!
First is he statement that a sea level take off is a long one. On the contrary, everything else being equal it is the shortest possible. Second that the first thing they would have done is pull the breakers. They would have put on oxygen masks! Even modern planes generate so much toxic smoke with a fire that useful consciousness is measured in seconds. They may have pulled breakers at some point but not before making an emergency call with flt id, position and cause of the emergency. If it was electrical in origin, the breaker was likely tripped anyway.
Then there is the attempt to explain an altitude deviation as a means to limit oxygen to the fire. Hello, its a pressurized airplane!
I have been on a plane, at altitude, with 3 foot flames in the cockpit far out over the water. The pilots declare the emergency, run the checklist and assign crew to fight the fire...everyone on oxygen and make for the closest field. You do not climb...it only takes more time to get down that way!The easy road is rarely rewarding.

Well let's see what comes of it but maybe, just maybe, they (the Australians) have found some wreckage in the middle of "Nowhere - South Indian Ocean."

I think, in the end one of the pilots being a little man decided to cash in his chips but wanted to do it in a way so he would always be remembered and become a big man.
