Yes they do spark in contact with heavy sand or small rocks.

300 yrd drives are the norm for me with my 1 wood,100yrds down the fairway,100 yrds in the air, 100 yrds to the right
I do play to scratch tho,always quit when I hit 70,might be 8 holes, on a great day may be 12 holes

I was gifted one when I trained for my green-card ( a Norwegian thingy that allows play on courses before receiving an official handicap.)
Wow, was that thing hard to flush.
But when it did find the ball on the sweet-spot, nothing gave a better feedback.
I loved that old 3-wood!
