Thanked: 14Presently, retired and in between shoveling and mowing. Reading though the post forced me to try and recall my rather checkered work history ..
. I've had a number of jobs, these are those I recall in roughly chronological order ..
Saleskid of lousy greeting cards (I'd forgotten, somebody else did this also) 12 years old
Weekend starter at a nine hole golf course (maybe 14 years old)
Gofer at a home building company, we mowed laws at the models, started fires and burned scrapwood, etc. (15 years aged)
Caddy at a Country club (didn't last long enough to get the big tippers) (16 years old)
Bricklayer's Helper for a girlfriend's father - he worked midnights in the steel mills, pored patios and built barbeques evenings
Refractory Laborer - best gig was the Smuker's jam factory (they gave away damaged jars), worst the pathological incinerator failure at Akron General, or the Dog Food Plant ..
Plastic Mould Machine Operator blow molding Hood Scoops for J.C. Whitney
Cardboard Box Assembler
Bowling Machine Refurbishment (boss bought out burned alleys and we stripped & rehabbed the pinsetters)
Sod Layer
Weekend Dormitory Bathroom Cleaner
Barrow operator, continuous pour concrete silos
Gearcutter
CoreFitter, Iron Foundry
Labor Relations Rep, Supervisor
Recruiting Specialist
Division Industrial Relations Representative
Plant Human Resources Manager
Country Lawyer

I have been a Diesel Mechanic 33 years so far .I have Worked for Trucking Companies, Truck dealership 13 years, Construction Field Mechanic, and now I work for The City were I live as a Shop Foreman on everything from Refuse Trucks, Fire Trucks, Medics, anything the City owns. It has taken a while getting use to the Garbage Trucks. I have been blessed to always have a job. I have done everything in my field, 100's of engine in frames, Cab swaps, trans. overhauls, steering box overhauls, wiring, anything to do with any size or brand trucks. I also hate any Ford Diesels after the 7.3 D.I. Our Medic Fleet of Ford Diesels 2011 - 2014 sends as much time in the shop as they are on the road. My advise STAY AWAY.

Wade,
In my late 30's through a series of truly bad decisions I found myself high up in a tree in the Ozarks, Mountain Home with a chainsaw cutting limbs without any ropes....so this crazy guy could get a better view of the valley. That led to a short stint moving furniture with the same crazy dude then nearly fist city...finally on the road with about $60.00.....out of San Antonio, TX. Hitchhiked to Arizona and got a job in a casino in Laughlin, NV. I landed in a town across the river with no money and no driver's license.....I regale you with this story because like Tarkus said, you have a sense of direction.....even with a little ADD, your compass works.....mine never has. On that cross country trip I finally ran out of food and money......I don't recommend that for anyone but to tell you the truth when I stuck my finger in my jar of peanut butter and got the last of it, I felt blissful. More blissful than when I picked up a job as a kitchen worker on the graveyard shift. Best wishes from someone who has been dropped in the abyss and clawed their way out....a few times."Call me Ishmael"

One of my first jobs was to sharpen farm equipment & woodworking shop tools for a trade school. I've also worked in carpentry, costume shop, fabricating portable bandsaw mills, waiter, and currently management in the banking industry. My passion has always been in craftsmanship and building, but my back was never up to the task, hence the current management role.
