Interesting stuff about the Eagles, James ---but are you serious about the abundance of Polka bands in Alabama -- to me Polka bands are about as un-southern as you can get ---maybe they didn't make it because southerners didn't want to listen to Polka -- maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah, that could be it - my music history is a bit rusty.

But man, who doesn't like Polka?? One of my most favourite albums is that one Weird Al Yankovic did a few years back. His Polka version of the Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" - pure unadulterated genius. Makes me want to dance everytime I hear it.

Don't get me wrong -- you hear serious legitimate hunters using the term "harvest" when hunting. But I don't know why or how this started ---maybe it's an attempt to better "sell" hunting -- but you even hear totally non-politically correct hunters like Ted Nugent use this term. I haven't hunted in a long while but I never heard the term when I did.

I was just wondering but Polka is usually associated with the Northern/middle part of the country. But I guess it is played and enjoyed everywhere ---- it just isn't southern --like the blues, jazz, rock n roll, blue grass, --- you get the idea.

Yeah - that's fair enough. It's not a huge thing down here either...

Anyway, back on topic - the gun thing. In Australia there's plenty of guns - our gun control laws make it difficult to own certain types of firearms, but there's plenty of non-automatic rifles of lower calibre about. I'm pretty sure my father still has my old Anschutz .22 at home (probably registered in my name even after 20 years). It's just that they're not obvious - the only people you see carrying are Police or armed forces (and the latter is rare). I don't think we have a concealed weapon license in Australia.

Is it that much different in the US? I mean, there are guns about but you really don't see them on a day to day basis?

Fully automatic weapons are illegal without a special permit ---- so even if someone owns an assault rifle , it's not fully automatic. I live in "gun country" and you will not see people carrying guns visibly --- maybe concealed --- I don't know too many who carry concealed weapons but people do. Most people keep guns in the house -- but people in general are not gun crazy --- it's just natural and traditional -- not really thought about really until questioned.

Yeah, that's what I thought. We see all the movies where everyone seems to be walking about with revolvers and blowing each other away, and transfer that onto everyday life in the US for some reason. Makes no sense really.

I would hate to think that the "average American" was something created by Hollywood --- not a very good image. You know even the Western movies about gunslingers where two guys face off against each other is mostly fabrication. They weren't that noble and brave in general --- but it is something that most Americans wish was true. Historically, the South was pretty violent and people say that's where Southern politeness and courtesy comes from -- if you know everybody is packing a gun then you better be nice. Even today you rarely see grown men in the South yell at each other or use derogatory language --- without altercation. But rest assure most Americans are good freedom loving people and gun ownership is just part of the package deal --- comes with territory.

    Jaeger-dude!

Well said! Good, thoughtful responses, and I agree with pretty much everything you've said. You've done a nice job of summing things up.

Thanks Mr. Lou --- I was trying to stray away from being too political but I wanted to make sure that Bobbo and others understood that traditional gun ownership has little to do with the punks that go into a place and massacre everyone and that the gun owning people I grew up with and come from were good people who I appreciate more and more the older I get. They were flawed like everyone but most were genuine and real --- two characteristics that are harder and harder to find. Thanks again.

    Default smoke dat a$$

    HOLY CRAP!

I walked away from this the other day because I figured no one wanted to hear about guns and look at the thread now!

I have compiled a list of those I know who carry and what they carry.

    1) Doctor----- Smith 462
    2) Housewife---- Feg 32 acp
    3) Nurse (male)---- Seecamp 9mm
    4) Pastry chef------ some Smith J frame
    5) Retired firefighter---- KelTec PF9
    6) Immigration Lawyer----Keltec PF9
    7) Dirty old man--------Smith 1911 45 acp
    8) 2 retired Sheriffs ----- 1 Taurus 85 and a Glock
    9) Waitress------- NAA 22 Mag
    10) Me -------- Makarov or USP9 or CZ52 or Taurus 608

Most of the cops I know carry off duty.

    Other points to clear up.

Not only do I not "Harvest game" , I don't " Hunt" either.
I'm a killer. Plain and simple.

Wildtim may know about the deer situation in the Norther Lower Penninsula.
Well I've done a BUNCH of crop damage shooting up there and its a damn slaughter. No sport about it.

    Next, Religion.

IF there is a God he/she is a generally mean and disagreeable sort of person and I try to avoid those types. IF.

    Politics.

The Democrats don't want you to cut a tree down because there is an owl sitting in it.

The Republicans point out that the owl will most likely take flight as the tree starts to fall.

    Seriously though.
The Democrats are nuts. The nerd from AZ was just on Tv preaching about equality the other day. Richardson I believe.

Their version of equality is equality of outcomes. This of course leads to favoritism and dare I say it? Yes, RACISM! The Democrats coddle and encourage racism through their policies among other things ie dependence on the state, the general erosion of personal freedoms through legislation concerning things that aren't their buisness, and furthering the causes of radical liberalism.

This coming election is the Democrats to lose.

Hillary IS going to make a run at guns. There is legislation in the works right now to ban anything semiauto and handguns over .30 cal and almost anything else that goes bang.

    I'm gonna hide mine.

Oh yeah, Bush is a complete idiot and the Republican party is generally destructive to the enviroment.

And as far as using guns in anger?

I carry on duty 42 hours or more each week right smack in the middle of the damn ghetto and have only drawn maybe twice (course I have to write a big damn report every time). Never had to draw my concealed weapon.

It's like Jeager-dude said. I've seen fistfights not 10 feet from a gun and no one ever even thought of using it.

    Here I go.

The inner city blacks are the exception.
Black culture (ie. rap music( so I go to my heavy Chevy and pop the trunk...I ain't never scared... I ain't never scared))
and such would dictate that you need to
    1) hold your weapon incorrectly (sideways)
    2) buy wheels and tires so expensive that you can't afford a decent car to put them on. ( 86 Cutlass painted purple with 26's )
    3) Try to be Billy Badass every chance you get.
Hence the more frequent occurances of gun play.
In the part of Orlando just west of downtown (Parramore) we hear gunshots on the order of at least once a week and often more like once a night.

Last night I heard a 10 shot burst from what sounded to be a intermediate rifle cartridge not too far off. Stray rounds sure are a bitch!

The second to the last man on this post got robbed at gunpoint.
The last man on this post quit after death threats.
They've tried to play me for a fool. They stopped. I'll smoke that a$$ and they know it.

I carry 76 rounds of Ranger SXT 127 +P+ , a baton, OC, a Spyderco Civilian, a Tasman salt, club style light, Cold Steel Zytel Delta dart with my pens, a Ka Bar marine fighting knife on my ankle and a class II vest with trauma plates raising it to IIIA or better and I keep a 12 ga in the trunk (just in case).
Oh, and I let my partner walk in front cause he... well... cause he will !

As far as using my weapon goes, I wouldn't hesitate for even the slightest second. Hell, that's why I have it!
