Thanked: 2027Am not dissing those that cannot buy even middle of the road Equip. You start off on the SR Journey real cheap (sweeny todd comes to mind)
and the journey will be less than steller and soon end on a sour note.
Is an old saying amoungst machinists, buy once, cry once.
Is it wise for me to buy a Bosch bandsaw blade for $8.50 that will be trashed in a week,Or buy a Laguna ($28.00) or a Timber Wolf Blade ($35.00)?
That will last 6/8 mos.
I tell people that want to start (even tho they may have an interest,I will not sell them one of my brushes or my strops)
Go to whipped Dog,your going to get Quality, middle of the road Equip that will work to get you started at a fair price.
Cheap is not part of my vocabulary when it comes to tools to do any sort of Job,Shaving Inc.CAUTION

I think that as you get older, you learn to find value in your dollar.
Nobody likes a cheap bastard, and you can't teach an enthusiastic new comer the difference
JMHO of course

My 1¢
That is why i am a Mentor!
Get them something usable and inexpensive to start and they will often go on from there.
Then there is Cheeep/ whine/cheep! Nudder story for sure. email. " I need a razor to renew.. i am broke and don't have any money." or "Will you drive a hundred miles and bring a razor and stones for me and teach me to hone it???" " I am broke but I really want to straight shave!" I won't even offer crackers to go with their whine.
No, I am not really cynical but I do occasionally let an opportunity go.

Just change the noun from cheap to frugal and it takes on a whole new meaning. it takes it from a negative to a positive and folks start to look up to you for being that way.

I'm understanding what you're saying pixelfied. And,,, I get equally annoyed.
Why? I believe there is a way to find effective, quality, *inexpensive* shaving equipment for starters. That is, starters who do their homework and don't come out off the bat with the questions you mentioned. To me, that means that they were too cheap to even do a tiny little bit of research. I would get far less annoyed if I were to see specific, well-researched questions about particular products that only those who've used them might be able to answer.
I believe a wide void exists between the words "cheap" and "inexpensive".
Now where's that $60 Escher. Still looking
