One of my favorite movies is Once Upon a Time in the West directed by Sergio Leone --- very much influenced by, Akira Kurosawa's Sanshiro Sugata.

    Default A new "classic"

At the risk of going off topic. Here is what can only be termed a new "classic" kung fu movie

Oldboy is part of the vengeance trilogy by park chan wook I think.
    Three awesome films about vengeance.
I think my favourite is sympathy for mr vengeance followed by oldboy, then lady vengeance.
There are so many amazing asian films outside of the martial arts genre. I just love the way the films are shot, and the ways they create feeling within the movie. Its great, I never feel like there are any cheap hollywood tricks to make you jump or cry. It is always good to be scared from creepyness than from a big bang, I think.

    Default More mainstream

Recent movies I saw were Curse of the Golden Flower (Chow Yun Fat) and Fearless with Jet Li. Nice direction and production qualities both - story lines were a little flat but much better than standard martial art dramas - Curse was filmed in the forbidden city and is spectacularly beautiful - Fearless was a little too gung ho China (it is generally Imperial Western (and Japanese) dogs running down China - which is actually a pretty fair assessment of turn of last century, but still). Of course some of the movies lose a little in the translation, as it would appear that both of these movies are either based on real events or tales of real events or common legends in their own country, making the average watcher not feel connected to the story as the filmmakers presume you are...if that makes any sense.

Both excellent movies, choreography is top notch - can't beat Chow and Jet man...
