    Default Foreign (Kung Fu) movies

    Hey all,

Anyone into Kung Fu movies or foreign movies. Recently there has been a gob of remakes of foreign movies (Like "the departed" and "the Ring") and re-releases of movies (like Iron Monkey), so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good movies I should check out.

I just saw The Host and it is a very unconventional monster movie. They show you the monster right away, trick you in ways you honestly don't expect them to and show the characters and dramatic action with a minimum of dialogue.

I've only seen the highly commercialized stuff like CTHD, Hero and Fearless. Even if I asked a buddy in H.K. for some recommendations, I don't know if the movies made it to the Americas.

personally i like the more artsy kung fu movies. Like CTHD, the emperor and the assassin, house of flying daggers, Musa the warrior (not as good but not bad), The Road Home was good but not a martial arts movie.

How was the emperor and the assasin? I was thinking about seeing it.

There is this lady in chinatown here that has a lot of movies from thailand, HK, China, and even Korea. That's where I get most of my stuff...I'm lucky that way. If you have something like that around you, check out Shadowless Sword (a korean war epic).

Also, if anyone knows of any good films period, please tell me about them. I also Loved Wasabi (starring Jean Reno). Yeah, my taste are quirky

Seven Samurai isn't quite the genre you're asking about, but its a must see that might expand your horizons. Find the DVD from the Criterion Collection. Watch it once, then watch it a second time listening to the expert's commentary track.

I'll take that further..any movie by Akira Kurasowa that I've seen has been very good. Highly recommended.

Seven Samurai is a classic. a must see for those who haven't.

Not trying to stick to any particular genre, just thought that the thread title would draw in movie buffs and I'd learn of some good ones. Anything is good as long as it is good

    Default Oldboy

    Hey Brendon,

My first post here; and, admittedly it's in a strange place given the context of the forum but there you go!

Anyways, if you want to see a cool film try "OldBoy". It's a Korean film made in 2003. The tag line for the film is:

"15 years of imprisonment, five days of vengeance"

You should be able to get it fairly easily (...in as far as non-English films can be rented easily!) as it won the Foreign Film Award at Cannes in 2004.

Before you worry about the arty festival commendation, trust me it's gory but intriguing with some really crazy twists and turns along the way. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's not kung-fu but there is violence within a compelling story. Ok enough of my eulogising.

    Hope this helps
    Dave

PS: For old skool kung fu: try the 36 chambers.
