It appears, so far, that the median age on this forum at least is the 46-55 bracket into which I fit being 49. I probably should start another poll to find out what our mental age is, according to my wife mine is probably around 12.

50 and feel like Methusalem. Too old for all this.
Being in the military for almost the whole of my adult life. I remember when i was the youngest nco in my unit for about 4 or 5 years. Little boy soldier they called me. Now i've been the oldest for almost the same time. Years ran away like wild horses over the mountains (Bukowski).

However. My wife is about 2 weeks older then i. As she turned 50, i said i feel like a toy boy with little over 40 yo to live with a woman of almost 60

When i enlisted (at the age of 23) 25 years of service was enough for regulars (nco's, officers and specialist personnel) for the full pension. Including my conscript year (at the age of 18) i could have retired at the age of 47. Three years ago.
Then the law changed. New law said that the minimum/maximum retirement age is 50 of age and not less than 25 yrs of service. If having less than 25 yrs, you get no pension but get just unemployed. Currently I have 28 yrs behind.
Then the law changed again. Now the retirement age is 55 and not less than 25 yrs behind.
Currently politicians are planning to change the military retirement ages again. I do not know how. I feel like pissed off.

My stepfather was an af pilot. He retired at the age of 37.
Some professions still have special retirement ages like navy divers, af and heco pilots etc. Strangely heco pilots can retire at the age of 48 but heco surface rescuers, 'tea bags', retire at the normal 55. I wonder which is more stressing job.

So anyone who enlists now who is 31 will do 24 years then get binned at a difficult time of life to find new employnment with no financial assistance, does the government have a good social security system?
