Probably staged however if it wasn't it's very understandable after all if you don't look down the barrel how do you know the bullet is still there. It may have simply vanished.

Actually I KNEW a guy when I was in the Navy who did that very thing with a .45 and it was for real. Everyone hit the deck, except for him, for a second or two and then he did too but he was dead by then.
