it's a common and minor surgery. No reason to suffer with that. My son had the same repaired a few years ago.

I'm not a surgeon, but I am a physician. I wouldn't delay on getting surgery. If a piece of bowel gets entrapped in the inguinal canal, shutting off it's circulation, it becomes a medical emergency and potentially can lead to death. At best, you're in for a lot of pain until it's surgically repaired. I wish you the best.

Men tend to avoid doctors more than women, and tend to "grin and bear it" when they have symptoms. After all, men are supposed to be tough. But sometimes a minor chest pain can turn into a serious heart attack if ignored. We shouldn't avoid things like a colonoscopy when we turn 50, and hope that we don't get colon cancer. Unfortunately, I had to watch my best friend and my secretary's husband die of colon cancer. Someone shouldn't ignore an inguinal hernia, and should at least have it evaluated. If that makes you "wincey", I hope that you're "wincey" all the way to the doctor if the need arises. It's no fun to get older and have to have unpleasant things done to us at our visits to our doctor, but we need to go as if our life depended on it.

Bill, I had one friend that I recall, back in the mid '80s who had a hernia like yours. At that time Canada had come up with what was then a new procedure, which IIRC involved using a mesh screen inserted into the incision to reinforce the muscles once healed. At least that is what I understood him to say. At that time the USA wasn't doing that so he went from NJ to Canada at great expense to get the procedure done there. I'm sure things have come a long way in 30 years so it may be even better in the USA then it was in Canada then. One way or the other, hope you get it taken care of and get well quick.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hi pixelfixed!!!
I feel sorry for your situation.
But i had a minor Inguinal Hernia sugery more than 2 years ago by TEP technique with syntetic MESH, and i have to say that it was not my best decision. After the surgery i had much more pain than before the surgery. It took about 1 year to have a normal day to me and now more than 2 years after the surery i'm still having pain if i try to do my workouts, a simple jogging or play with my kids. I can have a normal day if i don't stress my body. Now i regret the decison to have the surgery. I'm not trying to scared you, but read as much you can and talk with as many doctors you can before decide to the MESH surgery.
Take a look here:
No Insurance Surgery
I'm in contact with him to try to schedule surgery to remove the MESH and do something else. (the problem for me is the money. i'm in Norway and the surgery there it's all private)
and here:
"INGUINAL HERNIA REPAIR WITHOUT MESH"-"DESARDA REPAIR TECHNIQUE" NO MESH GROIN HERNIA SURGERY
He has a center or two in USA who uses his technique.
and the last one:
Hernia Repair | Hernia Surgery, Laparoscopic Recovery Treatment - Shouldice Hospital
Some say Shouldice is outdated, but many has been there and i don't hear many complaints.
...and here some more information:
The Hernia Bible self-help system for groin, sports, inguinal hernia
Just to finish.
I can see that your hernia is maybe a big one, so you have to be carefull and pay attention if the groin pain don't stop even if you lay down and/or you get nauseated you should seek for a doctor as fast as possible.
I hope it helps you to choose the best to you. You is the one who will decide the way to go MESH or no-MESH.
I wish you luck and a fast healing. Are you stressed???!!! Get out and go fishing!!!

Thanked: 3164I had a nasty hyena in my groin and tried to self medicate by rubbing a bouillon cube on it.
When I went to the docs he told me I had made a laughing stock of myself...
