Following WWI the USA became isolationist. President Washington's last address advised we stay out of "foreign entanglements", and that was a policy most of the USA agreed with. Then along came a guy named Hitler. If he hadn't allied with Japan, and if they hadn't bombed Pearl Harbor, how different the world might have looked today.

Following the second world war we had to contend with a country called the Soviet Union and communism. There was no avoiding foreign entanglements. Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, we're are in those last two for the long haul it looks like.

it's not just that Jimmy. With modern technologies the rest of the world can be minutes away and minor players can wield serious problems for all. Though it might be fanciful to withdraw into a cocoon the world around us will not allow that.

During the start of WWll there was a substantial pacifist movmt in this country even after Pearl Harbor. Stop and think if we had not gotten involved back then. Germany would have overrun Europe and Japan all of East Asia and Germany would have developed nuclear weapons way ahead of us with missile technology. How long would it have been before a strengthened Germany and Japan attacked us? Hitler was not full of surprises. He said exactly what he wanted to do before the war and did exactly what he said.

A really wrong decision made at the wrong time can exact a heavy price tag down the road.

Yes, a country need to focus on taking care of their own people. What Bruno has stated is also looking after your own people. There is nothing altruistic about using everyone else s resources up first and saving your own for last.

Mind you the Mid east is not your largest single source of imported oil either Company Level Imports .

Today's world and economy are global. Going isolationist would just mean cutting yourself off from the global economy and cutting yourself off from modern technology and either going back to industrial revolution era society or becoming dependent on the foreign policies of the ones controlling the global stage.

that is right the middle east is not the largest source of oil ,, that is something that boggles my mind a lot , our reserves are larger than theirs but that's another thread ,, as to Bills original ? whats wrong with America? my answer is ALOT!!!! and with all respects to those who are not here and only have info ,,, from the news sources who are definantly biased ,, its really hard to understand whats going on here ,, but what a great thread!! tc

Don't claim to know what is going on down there but I do know I think there is lots wrong up here in Canada right now. Thing is everyone has problems, different problems maybe, but problems non the less.

Another thing that puzzles me is the saying "war is good for the economy". If that is so then all the countries who have participated in the various wars in the last 25 years should have roaring economies with lots of employment and the money to look after their citizens needs. Infrastructure should not be crumbling, children should not be going hungry and so on. Where did the money go that was generated by these wars if not into that?

Yeah, I'm with that 100%. If it wasn't clear in my post, I am thankful that FDR asked congress for a declaration of war, and all that ensued thereafter. Throughout history one nation or another has tried to dominate the world. I don't see that ever changing, and if one nation is going to be the strongest, better us than any other. IMHO.
