Because it won't be easy. We will be fighting deluded religious fanatics. They fight because they want to die believing Allah will reward them in heaven with many virgins.

Well... Someone was keeping the region stable, but the US removed him, installed a puppet that did not represent the majority, and then pulled out and said the job was done.

This. Everytime we've worked to remove a secular dictator in the middle east/Africa (although a horrible person) we've ended up with worse. We continuously create power vacuums that are then filled by religious fanatics. I'm always amazed that the Bush administration doesn't appear to have ever looked at a map of religious affiliation within the middle east before going into Iraq. The two major factions of Islam collide in the middle of Iraq, and Saddam (through brutality) was the only thing keeping the 2 sides at peace. Then we did one worse by supporting Maliki, a Shia, who used his position to then go after the Sunni population. Many of the Sunnis who now support ISIS do so because they were disenfranchised under the Maliki regime.
Another point - I would suggest that maybe 10-20% of these religious extremists are actually true to their beliefs. The rest are either lured in via money, deception, or threat. Many to most of the suicide bombers aren't religious fanatics, they're either sick or very poor and looking to make money for their family before they die, or they're mentally deficient and used like pawns.

    +1.

There are enough people today making the world a worse place by calling for mindless slaughter. Anyone thinking that genocide and killing innocent children is a good idea had better keep that opinion confined to the privacy of his head, and never ever bring that up for discussion or imply it in any way.

That is but one example of what has been going on for a long, long time in that area of the world. It has been going on long before the US was involved by other nations. We are now having to deal with the cumulative effect of all that. In good part we are the authors of our own misery.

As far as waging "real war" is concerned, history is littered with empires that did so and no longer are around.

Yes, Saddam could be managed, like all the pics of Rumsfeld and others buddying up to him and he kept the Iranians in check. Remove him, cripple Iraq, and make Iran the regional superpower by default. Self-inflicted, not well thought out result.

What concerns me is whether Putin is behind the scenes supporting everyone who is anti-US, so that we are distracted by and committed on such a wide range of fronts that we ignore him, while he rebuilds the USSR.

This beheading practice has been going on since the first edged weapon was created,, the only difference in the Isis situation is that, they have made it into a sport. Going from city to city & beheading anyone & everything.

Soon the rules for the sport will change,, new players will enter the game, players who don't kill for sport, but kill for a living.
