Been running a Linux box for near 4 years with no problems. It is a bit odd at first, but would not go back to Windows. You can download and install some Linux distros on a usb drive to try.

Dumb question but since it's been sitting for two years, did you upgrade to 8.1 yet (free upgrade)? That fixed a pile of issues with 8.0

Aside from the machines at work, which went from DOS to UNIX, and various flavours in between, my favourite, and in my opinion, most advanced computer at the time, capable of true multitasking, would show this error occasionally:
