I've always thought of social media as being "the Facebook" ,(I call it that to torment my daughter) Twitter and Instagram but any electronic interaction with others is social media. I have always avoided things like the Facebook and tweeter (that's what I call Twitter to further annoy her) because they are so self absorbed and also because I work in the security industry and those just don't fit. I have to remain detached and neutral and on the social media mainstream anything and everything is so subject to being twisted and misconstrued that I just avoid it like the plague.

Not too long ago, there was a comedian who said his mom got MySpace confabulated with Facebook and was always asking him, why wasn't he on "MyFace?" Then went on telling him who all was on MyFace (Your father's on MyFace, your uncle....you get the point). Cracked me up. My daughters, who live for (anti)social media, didn't appreciate it nearly as much.

I don't do any of those BS places, just here.
I've always called it Myface. Cause that's all I see, everyone's face stuck in their phones, saying....look at me.!
Most all my friends want me to get an account. I say..why!? I got your phone #. I can call or text u anytime, and everybody doesn't have to know about it.!
That, and I don't need old girlfriends sending me requests n such. My wife has access to a lot of sharp things, let alone my guns.

Thanked: 315I waste enough time in forums. For some reason I've never spent much time on Facebook. A lot of people document EVERYTHING they do. When my daughter was born I told my wife I didn't want a ton of posts about our daughter on Facebook. People don't need to know exactly where we live, our schedules, where our daughter goes to school, when we are going out of town, etc.
I'm still not really familiar with the other social media apps/sites. Honestly though, I wish I did try to keep in touch with more people I went to school with.
I've gotten emails about the SRP group on FB. I need to check that out.- Joshua

I am very fortunate to teach the best and brightest seniors in our huge suburban high school. I sometimes ask them what the purpose of Facebook is (which kids mostly don't use anymore anyway). If they reply with the usual "It's to connect friends and family," I counter with "It's to connect your Face (with all your likes compiled by their algorithms) to targeted advertisements (like me getting mostly ads for knives and other sharp things on Instagram).
Or I'll tell them that if you're on a social media site and you don't know what the product is, YOU'RE THE PRODUCT! By necessity now, teaching media literacy is a growing part of my field.
Most of the kids are all over TikTok now. Little do they know that it started as an app developed by the Chinese government to spy on its citizens at home and abroad. There are many roads to sharp.
