How often do the bears "visit"? Is it a common occurrence?

    I suppose they're looking food.

I am fortunate in that in the area I live there has never been a single case of bears attacking people. For the most part they stay clear of town. It is a subspecies of the black bear, and they are a little bigger than the usual black bears. We have a mild enough climate and a large enough food source that they are rarely left wanting for much, except to be left alone.

    That's good to hear.

I don't suppose there's much Mountain Biking going on. Probably nothing more frightening than coming around a corner on a trail and seeing a bear with her cubs in front of you. I know I'd very quickly need a clean pair of shorts!

Back when the World and I were young, my grandfather was a Washington State Game Protector (his badge # was 32) anyway way back then it was cool for him to take others along with him when he'd be patrolling an area. Many a time I got to go with my little brother and my grandmother. Grandma would pack a lunch in her old blue with white pokadoted All Laundry Detergent pail.

One time (and I can still see it now) grandpa had dropped the three of us off at a campsite with a fire pit and a wooden table and we were just enjoying the day when a young black bear cub started walking down the dirt road toward us. My brother and I were So Excited! Grandma wasn't Pleased In The Least! And started throwing rocks and yelling at the cub! The cub ran away.

Damn! Were we ever disappointed!! We were too young to understand that were there was a 'Baby Bear' there was also a 'Mamma Bear'. But Grandma did!!

Oh those were the days, thanks to my grandfather, I've seen not only the bear cub, but cougars, badgers and so many other wildlife when I was very young.

Miss him and her very much!

Black bears around here wondering in looking for food and more frequently years when the food supply in the bush is slim. There have been extremely few fatal black bear attacks in Ontario over the years out of the many black bear encounters by humans. Given an escape route they will normally take it. In reality they are not a huge threat to people unless you are extremely unlucky and encounter a rogue bear. They can do a lot of property damage when they break into a camp or camper in search of food though.

People can do silly things with bears. A few years ago we had some tourists stop and feed a black bear. When the food ran out and the bear wanted more a mauling ensued.

Had to go looking to find this photo. I really enjoy watching bears, usually black bears, they are characters. We were watching this fellow happily eating dandelions in Waterton National Park. I have never seen a black eat dandelions back home.

I agree there is just something about seeing a predator of any kind in the wild, Bears and Cougars have always been my personal favorites to see.. Only seen the hind end of a fast moving Cat the second year we were here..

Bears we see more often usually at least one sighting per year, they are fun to watch.. Can't help but think "Heyyyyyyy BooBoo" when I see them

Wolves, Coyote, and Bobcat are rarely every seen I find the tracks but hardly ever see the animal

We have a Great Horned Owl that has hunted at the front of our driveway since we moved here, big beautiful bird, love seeing her.
