I am 56. I bought my first straight at age 18, but it wasn't a very good one even though it was made in Solingen and not Pakistan. Bought a couple of Double Ducks when I was 26, and still have one of them, the Dwarf, and wish I hadn't sold the Satin Edge. I like using old safety razors as well.

I'm 26, started shaving in February. Never tried a DE (although I'm curious) and haven't touched the Mach3 since I started with the straight.

It's nice to see that there are more guys here closer to my age than I thought. Mind you, in my head it still feels like I'm 16 a lot of the time

What are the Standard Deviation and the Skew and how are they calculated?
What is their significance to the statistical game?
Can we get the Mode if there is one?

Mean = average; Mode = most frequent; Median = rank the ages and take the middle age.

Std. Dev = measure of dispersion around the mean
    = square_root(1/(n-1) * sum[(Age_i - Mean)^2)

Skew = measure of magnitude and direction of deviation from symmetry.

Here's the results of a quick analysis of the data so far (just ran the data in the posts through one of my stats packages):

    srp1.pdf

    srp2.pdf

    srp3.pdf

The age distribution looks approximately normal to me. Both the number of posts and number of years spent using a straight are highly right skewed.

No obvious relationship between age and number of posts, or age and number of years spent using a straight.

Probably not surprisingly, there's a significant linear relationship between the natural logarithm of the number of posts and the natural logarithm of the number of years spent using a straight (p = 0.002)- diagnostics show the model is reasonably adequate, although the R-square is low... But in any event, the longer you've been shaving with a straight the more posts you make, on average. This could either be evidence in favour of the idea that those with more experience have more information to pass on, or that the older you get, the more you talk. [Edit: Actually, it's more likely an indirect effect of SRP - people who've been using a straight longer probably discovered SRP earlier than others, and so have more posts...]

Of course, this is a self-selected sample...

    James.

hmmmm lets see, it wan about 9 in the morning on a cold and rainy night with the sun directly overhead when i was born and that was about ten years before 1991. 1991 was 16 years ago, so that would make me 26? i think? well close enough, i havent actually started straight shaving yet but as soon as my razor gets here that will probably be the first day that i do, well actually i was late for formation one day and locked out of my room and all i had on me was a VERY sharp folding knife, it shaved but not very well and not at all painlessly but did the trick for the most part, so i you want to count that, it was about last year
