Seems to me that we have the best politicians that money can buy.

Thanked: 3227How is what Trump is doing and saying any different than any other politician seeking to take advantage of social and economic unrest. He is naming certain groups as scapegoats to be feared and wants to tear up trade agreements in a global economy. All this will bring pride, jobs and respect back to the US according to him.
You have an electorate unhappy with the way things are, looking for a messiah to lead them to a better place and Trump is claiming to be that something different with the answers. Almost seems to be the same type of conditions that allowed uncle Adolf to successfully use similar tactics to get elected. I am NOT saying Trump is the same as Hitler only that circumstances and methods appear to me to be similar.
How it all eventually shakes out remains to be seen. Interesting to say the least.

This seems to be opposite of your first paragraph:
If electing the government results only in self-serving leaders that is the case against the representative democracy, or as you prefer to call it a republic.
Trump is riding a populist wave which is the closest thing to a direct democracy. The idea of the founding fathers was that the people aren't all that good at ruling themselves directly, that's why they need an elite aristocracy to rule. The difference with a monarchy is that it wouldn't be a simple hereditary aristocracy, but elected. I.e. people may not be trusted to rule themselves, but can be trusted to figure out who would be the best in ruling them.
And now the people are saying that this isn't working - the leaders they have been electing have been pretty bad, so now they are going to elect somebody who is going to implement 'the will of the people' and not have this elitist attitude of doing 'what is best for the country' that the founding fathers had.

Right now as I see it and this has been said many times before..... The people want change! Maybe Trump will be that change? Clinton is from "the system". She has a political history and a lot of influence. I'm sure Trump has his connections too...... He is not a politician. She is a "professional" politician. The elections will be very interesting to see who wins.
If you look in the past.... There have been great, good, not-so-good, and terrible presidents. The USA still stands and functions. Every country all over the world goes through this trend. Is it over there or over yonder?

Yeah, the more superficially one looks, the more similarities one can find.
I don't remember Obama scapegoating groups. I remember him being the 'hope and change', 'no more blue states and red states' politician. I even think he may have thought it possible for a while, given that he dismantled his election propaganda machine when he took office.
But yeah, many of his voters did think of him as a mesiah figure that will single handedly make everything good, and his opposition tried very hard to make it a liability. But that was 2008, by 2012 people had a pretty good idea about the guy and he was elected again on his governing merits without the 'making history' and 'hope and change' parts.

Thanked: 3227Like I said "How is what Trump is doing and saying any different than any other politician seeking to take advantage of social and economic unrest.". With emphasis on "any" other politician without bias towards any political party. Point being Trump is just another politician and likely not the long awaited messiah leading the way to the promised land.
One difference that I can see is that most post WWII politicians in western (formerly)industrialized countries tended to shy away from the politics of hate and scapegoating. Probably because of the likes of Hitler and what he was able to accomplish by those methods.

Didnt scapegoat groups I recall Wall Street , Banks, Businesses, and any family making over 250k as essentially put to blame for the economic and social ills of our fine country. Maybe why these new candidates are trying to repatriate so much wealth that flew the coop so to speak.
