Unknown Oz, was part of that lot sale I snagged a while back.
it reminds me of the bog oak I received from Mike T in attributes though. Maybe closer to the bark?
Kauri is a balsa or the equivalent from my experience.
This might not be kauri then. Stuff is heavy and hard to turn. Almost resiny when the tools get warm..
At the end of the day, they should like em, hehe.
I think it is quite dense and fairly petrified?

Oh man, how did I never know about this one?!
Thanks for clearing that up Tom, now I'm gonna have to add that to my wood collection.
I wonder how many different types of bog/swamp wood are out there?..
The search begins! Now imagine an Indiana Jones character in an ancient temple holding a block of ancient wood yelling...
"This wood belongs on a straight razor! errr I mean in a museum!"
I went a little extreme with the Balsa comparison but the stuff I got to try is way to soft for scales and it is light in color.

It may vary but it is a medium rather than soft or hard wood. Was used for flooring in older Sydney houses 100 or so years ago.
These scales were repurposed kauri.
