Transponders in the fob allow those to do all kinds of stuff and do weird stuff when the battery gets low. If they could have permanent batteries and waterproof fobs they might have something. What do you do with your keys when you go swimming these days.

Didn’t Toyota have an issue a while back where some thieves got hold of a transmitter that would open and start many of the keyless models? Nothing like having your coffee and watching someone drive off with your Higlander.

Auhah!
I knew it.. My brothers wife has a massive key chain, so large that one might suggest therapy!
I just changed out her keylock cylinder and had to go through the tedious process of figuring out those dang teeth. Just about quit until somehow I succeeded, by accident really.
Big key chains! I told her that her key chain broke it and she laughed at me and said that's just about the silliest thing she's heard.
Sweet vindication :)

While you drive your keys swing back and forth. Essentially it is the equivalent of hand a two or three pound weight off your key and wiggling it for the duration of your days drive. Your ingnition is just a complicated switch with many contact. Both the electrical part and the machanical part take a beating.

A kid down here rented a Tesla 5 times.
When you rent, you get a temporary app on your phone for authorization and recognition.
Did his homework on all of it and went back. With his phone and doctored apps, he unlocked it and got in and drove off. He defeated the GPS and everything!
They caught him finally.

My stepson lost the spare key fob for the wifes Infiniti. I had to order a replacement. Went thru Infiniti and had them reset the old one too so if someone found the lost one, they wouldnt be able to run off with the car. 350 bucks! I thought about a universal one but lots of people say there had too many issues with them. Thought about just buying it from Infiniti and doing the change myself but i just had them do it. Got free donuts and coffee and a car wash by hand at the dealership but it was still not even close to worth the cost.
So if you have a nice car with a fob, DONT LOOSE IT!

I have a few of those in my shed too Tim.
As for keys and fobs they can cost a lot of money to replace, part of the issue is programming in the car itself but some keys are expensive because of the built in transponder but also the wat the key is cut. One of these for example is over $200 plus programming, so likely will hit the $300 mark as well.

Keys and programming in many ways a scam. For my 2015 ford they wanted around $200 for a key/remote at more than one place. After some research I got keys for $35 or so and programmed them myself without the black mystery box.
