Seriously, I'm a mathematician and the theory underlying the cube is rather elementary. The trick is to get to a point where 3 sides have 2 colours in a tri-diagonal pattern. Then rotate counter clockwise and down. Then, rotate in the horizontal plane. Then from the theory of Hilbert spaces, and using the L2 norm and a Taylor series expansion of the objective function (which in this case is trivial to calculate), it can be shown that the solution is a function of the distance you are standing from the rubbish bin and the time it takes you to throw thecube in it. QED.
