OK - I feel pretty stupid right about now.

I've always felt stupid when it comes to solving the cube. Even when I've followed printed so called "solutions" have I failed to get it right, and I certainly don't understand the principles behind the solutions. But then again, I'm not a matematician, and I haven't devoted an inordinate amount of time to learning how to solve that puzzle. My consolation is that I'm pretty good at a lot of other things that those geniuses are probably not very good at.

HOLY CRAP!! I wonder how many hours he spent practicing with those things? I have actually seen a blind person do this, although I don't know if it was faster or slower. From my understanding blind people actually have an advantage in this (when the cube is in brail), because they can "see" more sides of the cube at one time, but it was only with a 3x3

Once you pry the first corner piece out with the screwdriver, the rest is easy!

Why rearrange them? Just take all the stickers off - viola! We used to call this the "Gothic's Cube" solution.
Seriously, I'm a mathematician and the theory underlying the cube is rather elementary. The trick is to get to a point where 3 sides have 2 colours in a tri-diagonal pattern. Then rotate counter clockwise and down. Then, rotate in the horizontal plane. Then from the theory of Hilbert spaces, and using the L2 norm and a Taylor series expansion of the objective function (which in this case is trivial to calculate), it can be shown that the solution is a function of the distance you are standing from the rubbish bin and the time it takes you to throw the cube in it. QED.
