Thanked: 4249I've had the X27 for a few years now, its 4 pound with 36 inch handle. They stay sharp for quite a while, I use a diamond file to touch mine up. Like ScoutHikerDad mentioned the steel seems pretty soft, its a solid performer. When my son started to help splitting his aim was a little off, that tough on handles, replaced a few in the years, that's when I got this one with a lifetime guarantee on the handle. After probably 8 to 10 cords of wood this axe shows no sign of weakness, that saying a lot since I totally dislike plastic, especially on tools. There is definitely some engineering behind this splitting maul, I find that if it wont split after a couple hits better get the wedges out.
I see fiskar Isocore splitting maul getting very good reviews. Looks interesting.

One thing I've found when splitting wood is if it doesn't split in 2 hits, I flip it over. Splitting from the top down is always easier
Yes Martin, Fiskars has put some engendering into their products. And I'm also not a fan of plastic in/on tools, but I'm wondering if this doesn't have some carbon fiber in the mix.Look sharp and smell nice for the ladies.~~~Benz

Thanked: 4249Not sure either but whatever it is it's working. Been splitting wood for many years, I find that if you look at the log and look at the grain and knots you can figure out where to hit it for an easy split.

That is very true. I've also been splitting since I was a kid. Wouldn't want to know how many cords I've split. I go through about 10-12 cords a year heating our house, so it's a continual thing for me. I do have a great splitter but, as odd as it may sound, I enjoy splitting by hand sometimes

They say hard work builds character, and I've been told I'm one heck of a character before

As my father would say, "splitting wood warms you twice".

Have any of you guys had issues with broken handles? Curious if they break whether it's repairable or not.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 4249When I got mine I was told if you break the handle you get a new axe. Mine is as solid as it was new.
