I don't know anything about engines. But that kinda looks like a weird setup for those carburetors. I've never seen anything like this before.

Dont feel lonely. Many dont know. This is the engine in my Corvair. The engine is a 1965 140 with 4 carbs. Air cooled as you see the fan in the middle pulling air down through the engine.
A few here on the forum know what it is.It's just Sharpening, right?

Did you rebuild it, Jerry?

I had a valve seat come out and destroy the right head and piston right after I got it home from CA. I know a guy in Denver who is one of the most experienced Corvair mechanics in the US. He has written books and mentioned in other books. Worked in the dealership when the cars were made in the 60s.
He is 82 and still works on them. He found me a good set of heads and rebuilt them for me including a piston and cyl.
I broke the engine down and rebuilt the block up. Installed his heads and now am finishing off the last of it.
I replaced wiring from bumper to bumper. Added a few extra circuits for safety. Changed to a dual master cyl. Replaced brake lines wheel cyls, shoes, front end, replaced the rams on the convertible top, etc, etc... it was my Dads car that he hadn't driven in years.
Its still on going. Im not a body guy so i will have that done in a couple years.
Its a mix breed. 63 convertible body, 64 wiring and switches, 65 engine.
Im no Mike where I can reengineer a car from ground up but i do my best. Today Im in the middle of replacing fuel tank, mounting electric fuel pump better and new lines to the carbs. Finish that up tomorrow.
BTW, John, that is the factory air cleaner and carb setup for this engine.
Tom, Im no wrench like you but Ive done a lot of basic automotive repair all my life. Dad restored cars for fun so Ive been around it. When they put engines in sideways I gave up.
Oh, Its got everything that would make it a Spyder including the dash and emblems, except the Turbo. LOLLast edited by Gasman; 09-05-2024 at 03:06 AM.

Does it have the drum brakes? I have put a few of the remote boosters in the front boot. Works really well.
Neat car! I always likened them to a motorboat. All the heat and noise is out back.
Got hard and heavy on the VW's. Never owned a Corvair. Worked on a handfull. Hard to get the oil leaks sometimes. Piece of auto history."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."

Yep, Kept the drum brakes all around. I thought about upgrading to the booster and disc in the front but decided I enjoy the feel of the old brake system. Just change do the dual master to be a little safer. Dont like the idea of having to rely on the parking brake to stop if the master goes out. Its not like its a race car. LOL. Corvairs don't leak oil, they just mark there spot. Ha, Ha. Yep, they are know for leaking oil. Of course I went thought the push-rod tubes and changed to the upgraded seals. Now I'm finding a couple drips between the trans and trans axle. Maybe this winter if I feel the need as it means to drop the entire power pack to pull it apart.

A litte is great. Those shallow pans and kitty litter are the ticket.
The first guy I did a booster for had a pile of Camaro disc brakes and spindles. I just laughed. Paralyzed man who used hand controls. Hard to stop it.
He thought discs were the ticket. Camaro stuff would never fit.
Sold him a booster. His had an AC in another era, but the hoses to the front where the condenser had been were intact.
I stuck a check valve off the intake directly into a 1/2 ac hose and hooked it to the booster in the front. Pretty simple install. Cheap on ebay for British cars and such.
Cut the brake line from the master and plumbed that in.
He was happy."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."

My first car was a early 4 door with a tossed belt. My mom found out I had bought it and made me take it back. Hell, I was 14!
I had fixed the belt and was sneaking over to run it some. Had the auto shifter on the dash..... Never got to drive it"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
