    Paul, My understanding is that the glasses are equivalent to a shade 14 welding lens. I'm a welder and at times I have welded with the sun in my field of vision while welding. Comparing the sun to the arc, the sun was definitely brighter. Most people use a shade 10 for arc welding and I have looked at the sun for short duration many times with this shade without apparent damage, but a shade ten is too bright for more than very quick glimpses.

    I just took my glasses out and looked at the sun. Much darker than shade 10 and I was still seeing stars after 20-30 seconds of looking.

    During totality eye protection is not needed.

    I hope everyone who is looking forward to this (no pun) safely enjoys it. Here is something I ran across on the web that may be of use ;

    Yes, that's true. You just have to include the idiot factor for before and after totality.

    Well it's on Monday, not my best day, so I'll be doing whatever it is I'll be doing at the time.
    Then wonder why it's so dang dark and I'm not home yet

    Speaking of idiots--
    One of the news stations that I was watching from my motel was showing houses that were for rent during the eclipse and the prices were ranging from $2500 to $10,000 PER DAY!

    The only idiots are the ones willing to pay those prices. Smart homeowners should pair up and share one house for a couple of days and split the rent on the other.

    Me, my oldest son and my 11 yr old granddaughter are traveling from Ohio down to Tennessee and camping out for a few days, should be fun.

    I have to admit when I first posted this, I was just looking forward to an extra day out on the lake

    But honestly, I am kinda getting psyched about it now, I guess we are going to be close to 90%

    Going to pick up some Fried Chicken, have a couple of Beers and "Non-Tan"

    The wife has to work so I am going to get to actually relax
