I gave up hunting years ago but when I did I used a Winchester Pre64 Model 70 in 30-06--It's my son's now.

If that AR is what I think it is it's basically a .223 round which is illegal here in Washington State for Deer hunting. I believe that a round must be at least a .25 caliber.
