Sometimes you just get lucky
It's deer season here in TN or at least it is for center fire firearms. I went today and took my FN bolt action in 270. I was able to get a nice size 7 pointer (for those out west it would be a 4X3) by the time I got it on ice the weather turn wet and I'm waiting until tomorrow morning. This time I'll take the AR out for a walk. It's a lot lighter. I wonder what others here that hunt deer use. The AR is loaded with Hornady 75 grain hollow points match ammo. How about it . What do ya'll use

Excellent, another month or so, and I'll be heading about 10km up the street, just after December, been waiting all year to get me a nice big bear and that white fur coat, perfect size for a massive jacket, loads of meat, problem is, those Polar Bears are big, smart and curious and they don't back down...deadly combo....

Thanked: 4828I don’t think I will bother hunting anything that sees me as part of its natural food source.
I do deer hunt. We have a subspieceies of the mule deer called the Columbia Black Tail. They are fairly small. I hunt with a 243. Mine mis actually a kids gun. I love it, it is small and light. It is a lot of in and out of the truck and a lot of walking, I like it a lot. I was a bit of a train wreck out there today. My hunting partner has a big family. My needs were already met but we got the last three today to finish of his winter supply. I will go back out in a month and hunt for other families that can’t get their own. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I gave up hunting years ago but when I did I used a Winchester Pre64 Model 70 in 30-06--It's my son's now.
If that AR is what I think it is it's basically a .223 round which is illegal here in Washington State for Deer hunting. I believe that a round must be at least a .25 caliber. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Well, I just checked, and the peeps at the Toronto Zoo, along with the Police, wouldn't take to kindly to me trying to hunt the Polar Bears at the Zoo....turns out it would make the kiddies cry and I'd get arrested....

The 243 is an excellent caliber for almost all the white tail and black tail . If the bullet is placed where it belongs it'll take down a lot bigger game than most folks think it can. Here we're over run with deer. The part of TN I live in the limit on white tail bucks is 2 a year and on does it's 3 a day. When I was younger and in better shape I would put several deer in the freezer an then other folks freezer. It's not as easy as it once was to kill drag butcher and then wrap .

Yes it's a 22 caliber. I shoot 5.56 in mine. Tn allows it. Some of the people I know use a 22-250 also. We mostly put it in head or neck. The 12 pointer I got 2 years ago I shot him in lungs at about 150-180 years and he went about 50 yds. There really neat little rifles.

A well placed shot is what matters. There's been many a poacher who took deer with a 22 long rifle. I know as my grandfather was a Washington State Game Protector (Warden).
He used to tell about how years ago the State hired 'helpers' to keep the elk out of the farmers fields as the State had to pay for damaged crops. Anyway grandpa's helper showed up in the middle of the night all shook up. Seems that he'd fired a few shots in the air with his 22 pistol and this one big bull wouldn't budge so he took a pot shot at it and it had dropped.
Seems that he shot that bull right in the heart! No charges were pressed. Not long afterward they came up with a rope with a controlled burn rate and they used M80's every inch and lit the rope and approximately every hour BOOM! Grandpa would sneak a few of those M80's out and light them off of the 4th of JulyOur house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
