Default Are you a Coffee Snob as well?

Well as much as we love using the straights for shaving, we scoff at the people below us.

I was just wondering if any of you are coffee snobs as well. I know at my work they have instant coffee here, which I don't want to use myself. So I went out to a couple garage sales with my parents at the cottage and bought myself a french press (or in the UK used for plunger coffee). It is nice to just have a fresh brew coffee bean in the morning if I need it instead of the drab instant.

There are places around my work somewhat for me to go and buy a cup, but why bother with transit in my car when I can have this on my desk and at hand whenever I want.

Is anyone else like this? I know the coffee in the states especially at Dunkin' Donuts (which should be spelled Dough nuts lol) is pretty awful.

Hey, leave Dunkin outta this Their donuts are tasty. Besides, here in the states, donut is acceptable over doughnut

Myself, I can't stand coffee. I've had what I've been told is gourmet coffee, as well as bad coffee, and to be honest, it all tastes the same. It could be chocolate flavored or raspberry, yet no go. The missus is always having me try her Starbucks or whatever high priced drink she's got, and they all taste the same. My question is always this: and how much did that cost? It's scandalous how expensive those drinks are

This is why I brew my own at the desk. Stupid prices at Starbucks. Best story was going to one of them when I was in Kingston Ontario for the homecoming weekend last year at Queens. We all went in, and my ex and her friends order their fruity stupid coffee and drinks, I look at the chick and go you got a medium regular coffee? She smiles laughs and says "yes, and a simple order!"

i don't drink coffee regularly, this is actually my first time in about a month maybe, I just saw my press and wanted to make some. Then wanted to post about it.

Coffee is not only one of life's essentials for me (just TRY to make me smile in the morning before my coffee!), but is something to be enjoyed.

Got given an espresso machine 10 years ago and never looked back since. I get my beans fresjly roasted from a local shop (they have an old fashioned roast which looks amazing and makes the shop smell even better) and grind them at home with a burr grinder (boo to those cheap 'grinders' with blades).

As for shops, Star*ucks is possibly the most tasteless out there. Most of the chains are crap. You need to find yourself a small Italian deli.

As for roast, I like dark roasts (Italian roast, Espresso roast) mixed with a little (10%) Jamaican Blue Mountain.

And if I have to drink instant, I will! Some caffeine is better than no caffeine. It's a bonus if you can enjoy it.

(When I was at uni, I was quite the Mary Jane snob too, having sampled natural herbs the world over. That's all in the past now, of course. I've moved onto more dangerous things like shaving with a straight!)

Hey now, don't be bagging on Dunkin' Donuts coffee. IMHO IT ROCKS!!!! But I to brew my own coffee at my desk. I have a Senseo machine sitting the window sill, and I have two fresh cups every morning. The coffee is excellent, and a whole lot cheaper than Starbucks. I just refuse to support that place because of their outrageous prices, and the fact that they have tried to unilaterally rename small, medium and large to tall, grande and venti. What the heck is that!!!! And to shell over $2 for a cup of coffee. Not the fancy drinks, just a large coffee. There are over 12 Starbucks in the downtown area alone, and my building (yes just my building) had 2 (one is now gone for remodeling). Starbucks is the Borg, we will be assimilated, and resistance is futile.

Yes, I consider myself a coffee conousir. I buy whole beans, and grind my own. I make one cup at a time with a gold colored strainer that sits on the cup. The strainer is horizonal to the edge of the cup. This little unit comes in two pieces. The piece with the strainer fits on the cup on a flange. I grind my coffee very fine. Depending on the bean is where I put the setting. I use a Braun grinder because mose grinders do not grind fine enough. My setting is usually somewhere in the espresso range. - too course and I loose flavor, too fine and it runs too slow. I use 2-1/2 heaping spoons per cup. - very strong! When the grinding is done, I put the coffee in the strainer and place the second part on top. It is a holder for the water that has holes in the bottom. I know this is hard to imagine if you've never seen one. - but, you can't make a better cup of coffee this way!

    * I like my coffee strong and with a great flavor, but not bitter.

Now the coffee. This is important! I have bought coffee from many places in the world; Canada, Europe, several in the states; yes, I have found some good ones, but I have never found better coffee than what I get right here in Idaho. I buy it at the "Flying M" coffee shop - and the coffee is brewed by the "Purple Bean Coffee Company" of Nampa Idaho. The man who does the brewing is considered a "Master Brewer" of coffee, and I believe it! Hard to believe, but true. Their house blend is absolutly the best. When they are out of their house blend, I will get a coffee called Suluese(I think, sp?). - and it's excellent. Never buy beans at a mall. It's old, and way too expensive, and not worth a darn.

I never drink coffee when at a restaurant. It's like drinking hot water. If I am close to an espresso house, I'll get five shots of expresso in a 12 oz. cup. This will satisfy my need for a strong cup.

When I have people over and someone wants a cup, I have to cut the coffee down to about a 3rd of what I use, otherwise, they can't drink it. Like they say about making drinks for people, "it's as rude to make a drink too strong as it is to make one too weak".

    Regards,

    Steve

So given the coffee snobbery which is proliferating this forum, has anyone tried Kopi Luwak?

I don't know if I could drink it, as I would just be thinking about how it is "processed"

Tall, grande, and venti pisses me off too! I think it just makes people feel somehow sophisticated to order a grande double frappe latte machiato for $5.75 (I'm not sure if that's a real drink...it probably is). It's like an acquaintance of mine told me, sometimes people feel like they aren't getting a good product unless they pay a lot of money for it.

I think one of the reasons I don't like coffee is that I'm more or less immune to the effects of caffeine. My body is addicted to it, but I don't get that "energized" feeling most people get. On that same token, energy drinks don't effect me either.
