Thanked: 315Geek Squad said the windows update completely corrupted the operating system and the only way to get it running again is a hard reset.
So $150 for fixing it
ANOTHER $100 to backup my documents
$250 to fix a computer I couldn't sell for that much

I'm sorry to hear about this outcome. If you've been considering an upgrade it sounds like this may be the time to do it. Have them backup your data only and put the $150 for fixing the computer towards getting a new one.
Repairs can be more expensive than a new thing in all kinds of situations, and the only thing with real value on that computer is your data.
Plus if you buy your new computer at bestbuy may be they can just transfer the data from your current one to your new one.

Looks like I'm in the wrong branch, 250 bucks for that? Easiest money ever made, if I had to charge my friends I have done this for I'd be quite rich
150 to format and re-install the OS (You probably already pre-bought your OS at one point, so no idea why this is so expensive)
100 to backup some files
IT people lolz
Tell 'em to create a couple of partitions, so next time when they have to hard reset your OS drive parition, at least you'll still have all your files safe and sound on another partition and they don't have to charge you another 100 bucks to make a backup
If I weren't in Europe, I'd do everything for you for freeLast edited by TristanLudlow; 03-01-2018 at 04:34 PM.

Do not throw away that computer yet. Try using another OS like Linux, you might be able to get those documents you need copied to flash drive or another hard drive. The linux can be downloaded for free, and run from a CD or USB. You would need another computer to download it. I have successfully recovered data for people this way.

Thanked: 315As someone else was saying what I'm paying for is the data and convenience. I need it fixed asap and I've got a work document I really don't want to go back and retype a few pages all over again. We need to finish a business plan asap so my wife can present it to the right people.
I'm in the wrong business too Tristan. It is a bummer when you make $10/hr PT and have to deal with stuff like this. I made better money doing odd jobs and cutting yards in AL.
I don't know what a computer partition is exactly. I'll have to look into that.

Maybe try restarting the machine and tapping the F8 key as windows starts to get to the startup menu and then see if you can run last known good configuration, or boot into safe mode and then remove the last update

Thanked: 315I dropped it off Tuesday so I'm just going to let them deal with it. Hopefully it will be running better after a reset anyway.
