Ok TJ, I'm not sure what the blade length limit is, but since you live in a blue state I would guess 3"

Many people will tell you about how sharp a steel gets or the best style of lock or whatever the think makes the best knife.

I'll tell you right now, the best kind of knife to have is the kind you can use.

    I love my Spydies.

I've had others but sold them to buy more Spydies.

Anyone who says they are ugly and they don't like them hasn't ever had one.

savsonswordandkives is the cheapest I've found and they ship fast.

If I were you I would look at knife laws in your area. Even if you don't get arrested it still sucks to have you favorite knife confiscated.

If you want something you will never break then get a Chinook.
If you want a sleeker knife get a Native.
If you want a cool knife get a Para Military.
If you want a pretty knife get a Volpe
    or a S series

I don't know anyone who has ever gotten a Spyderco and didn't like it.

I'm saving up right now for a Military BG42 carbon fiber right now.
I doubt that would be the right knife for you though since it has a 4" blade.

I just remembered what my gramps used to say about knives.

"A good knife is like a sore pecker.....

    you can't beat it !"

Oh no, GW is recommending the same make as me. We agree on something. Now I'll have to go home and lie down.

    That's funny right there.

Spyderco are good knives my sharpening preference For SV30 is spyderco medium hone & a light stropping which will give you a medium edge with a bit of grab which will last longer when cutting all sorts of materials without needing to be touched up so much. Also look at lagouiles 12C27 ect ,ect.

Spydercos are great knives. I love mine. I've a Calypso Jr. in my pocket and an Endura in the clip holder of my Smartcarry holster. I also have a Swiss Army knife on my belt. Best bang for the buck though, are the Opinel French made folders in the carbon steel. When I used a knife daily on a job, this one out-performed all my more expensive ones, and at under $10 per knife these are an incredible bargain. Also the Opinel knife #8 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London as one of the 100 most beautiful manufactured items. See www.ragweedforge.com for these and other great knives; mostly Scandinavian. You CAN find Opinels cheaper, but I don't think you can beat Ragnar for just dealing with a heckuva nice guy.

Wow Dennis, those guys have Old Hickory knives super cheap.
I'm gonna have to get some.

If you are looking for a good kitchen knife TJ then I recommend those.
The only problem they have is staining.
DC can chime in on them for sure.

For the money, Old Hickory are hard to beat. But they are so frigging thick... They need a bit of thinning.

I'm sure I have a few squirreled away in some box's around here somewhere. I've gotten into Japanese styled knives for the past couple years so many of my older western pattern knives got packed away. I love the thin hard steels now

Thanks for all the help so far everyone. I took all your suggestions and to give you an idea of what i like, here are some of my favorites

    Benchmade http://www.savsonswordsandknives.com/grcoed1.html

    Benchmade (combo edge) http://www.savsonswordsandknives.com/berucoinst.html

    SOG http://www.savsonswordsandknives.com/sogvulcanvl01.html

    Spyderco http://www.savsonswordsandknives.com/spmise.html

I like the full size military and endura but is it worth carrying if its illegal? And is the wave feature on the endura a good idea? I really like the SOG...im like a kid in a candy store!!

    http://www.thebladeshop.com/index.as...n=Custom&ID=24

    state knife laws

it looks like less than 4 is ok, but I just scanned.
    Read it well.

I vote for the para military

    Second on the endura wave

I have the wave and it is super nice

    VERY FAST

one thing I like about Spyderco knives is that although they may look strange they don't have the mall ninja look of Benchamde
