Shaun-Having raised 1 son with severe ADHD (and taught many more), I can tell you that the medication for it is often a stimulant. The way it was explained to me by a doctor who specialized in it, the part of the brain that needs to be engaged for attention and focus needs to be stimulated to keep ADHD's on task. The medication does work; our son was on time-release patches for years. But like many teens on meds, he grew to hate it and eventually weaned himself off of them. He now works in an outdoor environment that is always changing, with different tasks throughout the day as part of his tree-work with our arborist neighbor.
Funny thing is, when someone like this zones in on a hands-on task that they are interested in (fly-casting, metal work, guitar, whatever) they can have laser-focus and discipline. The mind is a fascinating thing, and still mysterious in a lot of ways. There are many roads to sharp.
