Default 17 Days and Counting Down to Ubuntu 20.04 Release

I am really looking forward to trying the next LTS release of Ubuntu, mostly because it will now default to Python 3, a move that is long overdue. It is always kinda exciting to see what the next version looks like. Anybody else excited or curious?

What in the world is an Ubuntu? Is that some new razor the Chinese have come up with to replace the Gold Dollar? Or maybe it's a firearm or knife of some sort?

I would be... I wish I could be... but I'm not. Why? 'Cuz post-18.04 (Bionic) Ubuntu no longer supports 32-bit CPUs. It's as simple as that. I've no need to abandon my perfectly-functioning P4 3GHz motherboard/CPU combo (nor the 4GB RAM). But I don't feel bad about it: 18.04 is the current LTS release, with free support through April 2023, and for-pay support through April 2028 -- I should live so long.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming release!
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

Yeah that is a downer. I forgot about that. But a P4... can't it access more than 4GB of RAM? Maybe an overclock and a RAM upgrade would make it work with a 64 bit Linux?

Who knows? That would require some serious hacking, in the true sense of the word. Too deep for me, and probably not a worthwhile project.

In the practical sense, it is the upgrade from WinDOHs to a grown-up operating system. But I suspect you already know that.

I like Ubuntu but I made the move to Debian and never looked back.

To bring it back to straights, there is an interesting parallel between them and linux. Both appeal to folks who care about the process as much as the results, who value authenticity and the experience and doing it right.

Hey, Debian is great, too. I thought about switching, myself, when 18.04 didn't totally rock my world. It was good but I was hoping for better. Most of my puters are still on 16.04, actually. I think 2020 version is gonna be pretty good, though. But it's all Linux, all open source, and that's what's important. I don't trust Microsoft to watch out for my best interests, especially when they won't even release the source code. Security through obscurity has always failed catastrophically, eventually.
