Thanked: 1082Whilst I dont condone hunting for fun, I totally understand hunting for food, we were hunter gatherers after all.
You also grow your own food so you are self sufficient. I find this very commendable.
Basic skills for survival has been lost in modern times, I wonder how long people would last without a convenience store?

Thanked: 59It is definitely a mindset and a lifestyle. We sold our 5 bedroom, three bath custom dream home and moved out here into an off grid cabin in order to start. This included taking a 2/3 pay cut. I went from an engineering firm with neck ties and wine to cowboys, work boots and Bud Lite. However, we have no debt now and the water keeps running down the mountain and the wood stove is hot, even when the power goes out (which is frequent).
After church on Sundays, the group comes over for lunch and we sit outside under the patio in the shade and talk while we watch the ducks roam across the yard and the kids go swimming in the river. Sometimes we light the camp fire after dark and play music for the kids to swing dance to. My 17 year old boy would rather be on a tractor than playing a video game, which is fine by me. It's a simple and slow paced life, but it is a lot of work at the same time. I guess for me, it's not about working hard so that you can enjoy your time off. It's about enjoying your work and appreciating every aspect of your life.

I have enjoyed bear meat harvested in northern MN.
Not garbage bear though. I believe you are what you eat!
The only thing with bear is to be careful of trichinosis. No jerky or under cooked.

Im a city boy. No hunting except when Uncle Sam taught me to kill man. So i just had to do this...
He said... I would understand better if you were going to track and bag a human being. The skills it takes to assassinate a human are at a much higher level and they are of a greater challenge. That I can understand.
I say...
Id have a hard time eating one of those also! My meat comes from the grocery store. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4828I too try to live close to the land. I don’t understand why anyone would choose feedlot beef if they had a choice. I’ll take mostly organic non gmo modified foods over the other any day. I must say though, as I am not much of a fan of bear meat, I don’t bother hunting them. There are those that think it’s the best. Both bear and sea lion are all in the preparation. It’s either delicious or terrible. venison, fish, grass fed beef and non commercial chicken account for all the meat in my diet. For me it’s all about the living close to the land.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Hunting Bear or Mountain Lion, you best know what you be doing or you might wind up the prey.
