We have used baking soda for years also and never a problem with odours or strange things growing in it.

In 50 years of driving I've driven most types of car, light truck and motorcycle. I still repair and drive vehicles made from the 1950s through to the present day.
My daily drive is a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid with ABS, stability control, lane departure warning, reversing camera, auto dip headlamps etc., It makes driving a pleasure. Maybe it's different in the US, but I can turn off proximity sensors, lane control etc., at the touch of a button.
Trouble is that when you turn some of those off it only stays that way until you turn the car off. When you start the car up again it is back to factory defaults so you have to keep shutting the damn things off each and every time you restart the car. Traction control in winter city driving drives me nuts. Wish I could shut it off and only have to do that once.

I think the issue with things like traction control is whether they are catering to people like you and I (born, raised in "The North", trained and experienced in winter driving, etc.) or the driving public in general. I know I don't need traction control because I was taught to drive right from the start in snow, on ice, etc., by my Dad who was a damn good driver and an excellent teacher. But on the other hand, I'm sure there are times when I have not been rear-ended or t-boned in winter because *someone else* had traction control.

Surely there must be a way to have settings like that individualized for each driver. But even with that, I'm sure Dunning-Kruger would kick in and the most incompetent amongst us would be switching off all the safety aides.

I would have a problem running a toaster when I wasn't at home. A few mornings ago It entered my mind to start the cloths drier when I left for work and my wife was still a sleep. I didn't and she started it when she awoke.

I suppose much of this is from using "old fashioned" things.

One of the silly things that makes me mad with my latest truck which is a dodge is that I cannot turn the radio off. And it is built into the truck so it is not easy to remove from what I see.

Our fridge sounds similar, its a French dubl door behemoth with an ice maker etc.
Has air and water filters on board which are redundant because I run RO water directly to it, and well, love the baking soda box in the back as well.
Just got used to the red warnings on the display. Luckily the led’s are burning out so soon it’ll be blank. Like me when looking inside for food......

Regarding the cars features, there ‘should’ be a way, before you hit the starter button, but after the ignition is powered up to allow you to disable the features you don’t want to use and then save it to your profile. Save you from doing it every trip.
My VW works that way anyway.
So many corrective features now for distracted drivers,,, I don’t care what they say, it’s distracted drivers they are trying to help. You could drive pretty loaded now and still get home. I don’t condone dwi’s, I’m just making an observation about the tech.

I'm an electrician and you would be surprised how many times I've been yelled at by office workers telling me the powers down or theres an electrical fault because the lights are off only for me to turn up and flick the light switch on!
Its usually cleaners turning them off before they leave of an evening. Some prick once told me he had been working in the dark all weekend! I think some people are so used to smart homes/offices that 'old fashioned' things blow their mind.

    On another note.
I remember a few years ago someone telling me that physical money will be obsolete as it will be digital currency only. I didn't believe it at the time but the way things are going over here they could well be right.

Or if something doesn't work the first thing I check for if it is plugged in!

Don't worry, in a few years from now you'll get into your car and be greeted by a voice asking you where you want to go and it will just take you there. You'll just sit back and do nothing after it puts you in a vice like harness.
