We’ve decided to buy a classic pickup truck for our next vehicle. I get enough of the nanny tech in my company tractor trailer. Maybe an early ’70s Chevrolet with the long bed to load the Harley into for those snowbird trips to Florida.

Yea, that should do it. Wasn't much in the way tech in my 74 and 75 GM pick ups.

Interesting thought about your nanny tech.

I can see how it would bug you when something keeps second guessing you, especially if it is your living.

For me it's quite the opposite. Two years ago I was crossing a dual carriageway and I T-Boned a pickup truck that was going about 100KPH (60 MPH). It was in a blind spot so i couldn't see him and he just appeared out of nowhere. There had been an accident at that junction the week before mine and another the week after so it is a really dangerous place.

Anyway, we both spent a month in hospital and i still limp two years later.

My point at last is that because of the accident we had to get a new car. We were on a mission to get the most safety possible to reduce the chance we would have another accident like that one, my wife even had to be revived in the ambulance.

We settled on a Ford Escape Titanium (kuga in England). It has a warning when a car comes along side for overtaking or if I get close to something at the side (putting the car into the garage is a really noisy affair), it has an alarm if I drive too close to something like the end of the garage or the back of another car, it has an alarm if something gets behind when I'm in reverse and it shakes the steering wheel if I go over the centre line on the road unless I'm indicating. Obviously it has the airbags etc and if they activate, the car dials 911.

It's my understanding that all cars have a kind of black box attached to the airbag system.

I know that i am not bullet proof now and the car won't stop me having another accident but I'll take all the help i can get.

My truck is a 2003, so my experience with most of these features is second hand. But, all of the features that try to control my car scare me. Anti lock brakes still scare me, not that it comes up often, because it seems like my brakes have failed when I really need them.

I also find the alarms distracting. I was in a car that a little light flashed in the mirror every time a car was next to me. So, every time a car was next to me I looked in the mirror instead of where I thought I should be looking at the time. There are some features, like the cross traffic info, that sounds pretty good in some situations, but just politely tell me and let me drive, please.
