I watch CNN, it amazes me that they can talk about this stuff with the exclusion of all else 24 hours a day.

I know that this election and protester stuff is big news but 24hrs a day, talk about floggin it to death!

Welcome to the modern world and news cycles.

Personally I long for the days when all these news channels didn't exist and network news on TV was 15 minutes 4 times a day and most folks got their news from newspapers.

I remember the days of Walter Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley, Edward R Murrow. TV news people with credibility who were not afraid to take a stand and were not particularly influenced by viewer surveys and polls. I may be looking back in time through rose coloured glasses, but I trusted those voices and those of the correspondents who worked with them. Not so much now. The closest I’ve come recently is the tv show The Newsroom, but that was fiction.

I specifically remember when Murrow took on Joe McCarthy and the “anti-communist” hearings and the blacklist. That wasn’t just news, it was historic.

There are so many sources of information and mis-information now no wonder people get confused or bamboozled and believe in the existence of alternate facts and conspiracy theories. When the sources pander to the lowest common denominator or the greatest return on investment, what gets sacrificed is credibility.

This is why I don't watch the news. If it's really important the wife will tell me about it. Other than that she doesn't tell me. She is my buffer that keeps me sane.

This only works in my house if she thinks she is scooping something. And then it only works if she scoops the beginning of the story and not the end. Otherwise I will just get "Smith resigned". Then I end up with an increaslingly frustrated lady spitting out sentence fragments in reverse order back to the beginning of the story. "Alaska's assistant to the Sec of State". "The tweet". I'm just hoping I get enough be able to guess, or recognize it, before I get the big sigh and "nevermind". Because nevermind is actually the transition to preschool mode where she explains it me pulling out all the big words.

Poor thing, she thought she was getting someone smart because I was reading a book when we met.

The 24 hour news cycle has really killed the news for me. In Australia there's not a lot (compared, say, to the US) going on domestically at any particular moment, but we still need to talk about it 24 hours a day.

I swear (no exaggeration here at all - you guys know me...) that our Prime Minister stubbed his big toe on the way to the kitchen in the middle of the Washington protests/riot last week, and they interrupted that to go live to kitchen-cam for the application of the bandaid.

There have always been mongers and believers of false info and conspiracy theories. The difference is years ago those folks "lived under a rock" and stayed there and thought they were the only ones. Now they have come out and used the internet to meet and greet each other and the rest is history.
