Does BBC News have any competition in the UK? Are they government funded or sponsored in any form? Who do they answer to?

Let me clarify the England example a bit . . .

When guns were still legal in the UK, most home break-ins occured when people were not home, because the burglars didn't want to run the risk of an armed resident.

Now that people most likely don't have guns in their homes, break-ins frequently occur when people are at home, resulting in much more personal injury to the occupants.

Not to sound like an idiot, (read Heliguys signature line ) but the BBC has publicly admitted bias in their own reporting (especially about Iraq).

I am here in the concrete jungle of Texas, and I for one, am very glad that I have the right to defend myself and not simply wait for the police to pick up what's left after the fight has already been determined. We have concealed carry in Texas and I exercise my rights. Interestingly, I feel like it makes me LESS likely to become entangled in spats. Just better to avoid them.

The BBC receive state support in the form of TV licenses. Everyone owning a TV capable of receiving broadcasts has to pay for a TV license in the UK (just under £200 per year). The license fees helps support the BBC.

The BBC has historically been run by a board of governors who are meant to be independent. There has been talk in the last few years of totally modernising the way the BBC is administrated, with the abolition of the present governors' system.

With the advent of digital TV broadcasting, the general public has access to a lot more than the previously 5 channels available to them free of charge. Other free news channels include Sky (Rupert Murdoch), ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and until recently CNN.

Much of the UK population subscribes to satellite or cable TV, and so there is even more access to other news channels (both US-based as well as Europe, and of course the new English Al-Jazeera news channel).

The BBC has not been totally devoid of recent allegations of bias in the nedia, but it is still viewed (rightly or wrongly) as the least agenda-driven of the news suppliers. I tend to agree.
