We call it...hooking a dinner plate. When you hook into a big sunny, its like attaching your line, to the center if a dinner plate, and trying to real it in. Such a blast.!
I question your statement about the better accuracy with the short rod. If I was fishing docks I could use the 7 footer like a cane pole. My buddy likes his 9'. A fly rod blank made into a spinning setup can be interesting.

I fish mainly to the shoreline and into fallen trees. If you get to close you can scare them so the longer casts are nice.

I am a little different than many though. For example I like to use a 15 foot cane pole to fish trout in small streams.
