Thanked: 0Pipe smokers of the world unite.
Anyone else in here smoke a pipe?
If so what do you smoke?
My main staple is an old estate bent briar with a mottled texture made from waxberry i think. I procured it from my now dead grandfather, it was his favorite and also mine.
Ive tried other pipes for extended periods and keep returning to this old dinged up deep bowled piece of magic.
There are others in my collection, mostly briars, straight and bent and of different woods (no clay or meerchaum as yet) and im still on the hunt for that bargain churchwarden on ebay.
As for tobacco: daily i smoke Mellow Virginia (pipe smoking is a somewhat lost art around these parts and getting decent enjoyable tobacco is a bit of a challenge), its got a nice mellow and tangy flavour and seems to burn uniformly and at a bearable temperature.
As for special occasions i smoke MacBarens Cube if im in a readyrubbed mood or when i have some to hand rum flake.
So anyone else like to relax with their favorite pipe after a nice shave?

I'm also into pipe smoking. I mainly smoke strong English blends. My all day smoke is Dunhill's 965, but I do rotate depending on my mood with Virginia Flakes. My main pipe collection consists of several Peterson's, mainly the system style. Happy puffing/shaving.

PS. Another site where you can spend countless hours of your time is
www.pipes.org. Great site if you haven't already come upon it.

Thanked: 150I just started smoking a pipe (literally 2 bowls ago), and enjoy it. I only smoke on a Friday night to relax after the work week, and put myself in the right state of mind going into the weekend. I have on burl pipe and one corncob pipe I purchased from a local B&M, and have smoked a local blend called "hobbit's weed" (Cherry and Vanilla), and have a bled called "rocky mountain high" (not that kind of high, I say no to drugs), which is a blend of Cavendish and Burley (nice smelling but yet to smoke it).
Before the pipe, I smoked a cigar on Fridays.

When I used a pipe it was mostly off brands inherited from my grandfather. But it was all local blends. Eventually I took to mixing my own, no real formula just anything I didn't particularly like went into the big bowl. I got some of the best unrepeatable blends that way.

I enjoy a bowl of My Mixture 965, University Flake or Penzance now and again. It's been awhile. I typically don't smoke in the winter since my wife has issues with me smoking inside.

On top of a cheap corncob id suggest visiting a tobacconist, most have sample kits consisting of 5 ~ 10 different tobaccos, generaly ready rubbed blends that you pack in and smoke.
If you develop a taste for it then pick up an estate pipe you like the look of (estates are pre-smoked so theres no breaking in period, like a prehoned razor)
Its probably the best route to fiding something you enjoy.
Id also suggest reading up on tobaccos before you smoke them if your inexperience, when i had first started out my brother got me a bag of latakia, and me having little to no real idea of tobaccos at the time i went ahead and loaded a bowl full and almost puked. i had no idea it was generaly for mixing. Like mexican or russian water its going to have unpleasant effects if your body is unprepared to deal with it.
a decent lighter also goes a long way as does a hedgehog (i dont know what they call them in the states but they look like a clock key with a cheese grater attatched, used for reaming out carbon) and a nice ashtray that will hold a pipe and has a cork tamper is a plus (but none are essential)
Just pick up as many different tobaccos as you can and try them out.

And when you try for the first time you may get "tounge burn" it's not really a burn as much as a reaction to the unfiltered tobacco hitting your mouth. If this happens have some milk on hand that advice helped me out greatly. of course I'm lactose intolerant so that opened a whole other world of problems.

I have a bunch of pipes all kinds, I smoke all kinds of tobacco. My favorites when I'm on the bench. A bent stem, and an aromatic cherry.

I've been enjoying pipes and cigars since 2000.
I usually smoke anything by McClelland. I'm particularly fond of Frog Morton on the Town and many of their Virginias.
My pipe collection consists of some vintage Dunhills and Upshalls along with many less expensive Savinellis. I have a good friend who took up pipe making a few years ago and is getting ready to launch his high end line shortly.
There's a pipe smokers club that meets here in Virginia Beach, VA the first Monday of every month. If you're ever close by you should join us. Just drop me a PM.
Straight razor shaving, pipe smoking... if we get any more relaxed we'll be asleep.
