    Hmm...

I have a bunch of Stanwells and Petersons which seem to work well with Dunhill's 965. I also have a Dunhill which works wonderfully well with its namesake 965. If you haven't smoked a Calabash with a good English blend, you haven't lived. My favorite corncob tobacco is MacBaren's Mixture.

It's interesting to me that different pipes seem to like different tobacco, or when smoked with one, will always have that taste. I bought used a nice little Peterson Apple that had obviously been raised on an aromatic blend. It still hints at the taste of that early perfumed aromatic despite almost 20 years of 965. Win a few, lose a few, hmmm??

And then there's Muniemaker cigars -- heaven on the cheap

I used to/still do collect pipes. I have a decent collection. Nice meerschaums, one dunhill, other briars etc. There was always so much I didn't know about them though... I should get back into it.

    @ Eastree

On top of a cheap corncob id suggest visiting a tobacconist, most have sample kits consisting of 5 ~ 10 different tobaccos, generaly ready rubbed blends that you pack in and smoke.
If you develop a taste for it then pick up an estate pipe you like the look of (estates are pre-smoked so theres no breaking in period, like a prehoned razor)

Its probably the best route to fiding something you enjoy.

Id also suggest reading up on tobaccos before you smoke them if your inexperience, when i had first started out my brother got me a bag of latakia, and me having little to no real idea of tobaccos at the time i went ahead and loaded a bowl full and almost puked. i had no idea it was generaly for mixing. Like mexican or russian water its going to have unpleasant effects if your body is unprepared to deal with it.

a decent lighter also goes a long way as does a hedgehog (i dont know what they call them in the states but they look like a clock key with a cheese grater attatched, used for reaming out carbon) and a nice ashtray that will hold a pipe and has a cork tamper is a plus (but none are essential)

Just pick up as many different tobaccos as you can and try them out.

And when you try for the first time you may get "tounge burn" it's not really a burn as much as a reaction to the unfiltered tobacco hitting your mouth. If this happens have some milk on hand that advice helped me out greatly. of course I'm lactose intolerant so that opened a whole other world of problems.

I have a bunch of pipes all kinds, I smoke all kinds of tobacco. My favorites when I'm on the bench. A bent stem, and an aromatic cherry.

I've been enjoying pipes and cigars since 2000.

I usually smoke anything by McClelland. I'm particularly fond of Frog Morton on the Town and many of their Virginias.

My pipe collection consists of some vintage Dunhills and Upshalls along with many less expensive Savinellis. I have a good friend who took up pipe making a few years ago and is getting ready to launch his high end line shortly.

There's a pipe smokers club that meets here in Virginia Beach, VA the first Monday of every month. If you're ever close by you should join us. Just drop me a PM.

Straight razor shaving, pipe smoking... if we get any more relaxed we'll be asleep.

We could add a discussion of brandies or whiskies...and just slip into a coma....

I enjoy smoking with a bent briar pipe, and focus mostly on aromatic blends. The Tobacco Junction near me makes a fantastic blend called "Pralines and Cream" that is very smooth and dark.
