Tasers and/or firearms are sometimes necessary if the threat level demands it.
There is a factor which determines threat level; the size and strength of the police officer compared to the violent suspect.
In this age of political correctness, many officers are just too small to control a violent offender.
Reasoning will only take you so far with the drugged, drunk and deranged.
This means that they often have to revert to weapons to control a suspect in away that was never needed when officers were selected for their physical as well as mental attributes.

The officers now face perjury charges. It looks unclear whether there will be further charges.
