Thanked: 1A Shelby
I just happened to notice the word "Shelby" in your post so I had to look. I owned an original 1968 Shelby GT500, gold with black interior. It was a wonderful vehicle and fond memories come to mind when I see the name or read stories about that car. I eventually sold it because I couldn't afford the payments along with the insurance. I still have the original keys and the payment book. I was paying about $82 a month for that car and I bought it originally for $2700. Seems like nothing now but, back then, $82 was a week's salary. The insurance was another $50 a month and I had to let the car go.
That Shelby, with a 428 CID engine, was an absolute mind-boggling thrill to drive.
I notice that I am smiling as I write this. Thanks for your post. Nice memories.

That is so nice, unfortunately you would have to add 300% or so to the price in order to register it in Denmark =)

I've had the opportunity to meet Carroll Shelby a number of times. He had a small ranch property outside or Pittsburg, Tx where I lived for about 15 years, and not far from his birthplace. A true gentleman with a great sense of humor.

Thanked: 20Don't know Carl Shelby.. don't know if I want to. There are accomplishments I have made in my life without the influences of geniuses... and I prefer to stay by what makes me.... well, me.
On the other hand.. I don't want to do the hero worship thing either.
Sometimes things strike a chord with us. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for a lifetime... the Shelby has struck a chord for me forever and a day.. and maybe I don't know why... and maybe I don't want to analyze it.. because beauty is what it is. And this car.. crap, this is fucking tits on ritz and 3 generations more. I have no heros in life.. but this is as close as it comes.
My soul.... bared.. naked.. and the open road. Soaring spirits and I will never die. But just once let me shift that last gear to nowhere... and keep going with the wind in my face and a lifetime built into just one short minute where I understand more than folks do who live.. for ever... and ever... and I will live forever.......Yes, that is what I get from this car.
Fly with me.. if you dare.
I missed buying a 67 Chevelle rag top from the neibors once for $600.. Something in life you never recover from. Once I knew a single guy with a '59 stingray.. and once I had a .54 Caddy Luxury 4 door with 49k miles on it...... and the tail lights flipped up... and the Sexty Sex Stinkin' Lincoln with the suicide doors and hydrolic windshield wipers.. man.
This is why I ride my Harleys.. to this day, after an accident that should have crippled me. Life... sometimes a car says it all....Last edited by Mama Bear; 02-26-2008 at 07:00 AM.

I know what you mean about great opportunities lost. About 10 years ago I missed out on a beautiful Mustang 2 for $400. I was young and stupid, that's all I can say about that.

Mama Bear's response and the growing push for greener and more environmentally friendly cars made me think of this song. A future (not so much) scenario where environmental laws are so severe that gas powered cars are outlawed, but a young guy who understands the power of freedom and the need for such things as unadulterated fun, risks it all and breaks the law to drive his uncles Red Barchetta (Ferrari).

Red Barchetta by Rush
My uncle has a country place, that no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the motor law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes and hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire, where my white-haired uncle waits.
Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me, an old machine ---
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car
A brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished time
I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime...
Wind in my hair ---
Shifting and drifting ---
Mechanical music ---
Adrenalin surge ---
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud
With fear and hope, Ive got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded
At the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle
At the fireside...
